There's a dark side to obesity that's only recently getting attention; millions of people from all walks of life are often stigmatized and even shamed based on their weight -and it's one of the most pervasive and acceptable forms of bias and discrimination. In advance of Weight Stigma Awareness Week (September 21-25), Stacey Cahn, PhD, associate professor of clinical psychology at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, discusses the causes and consequences of weight stigma.

Population health study examines real-world osteoporosis treatment patterns

A statewide study has found that from 2005 to 2012, fewer than a quarter of men and women with documentation of osteoporosis or fragility fracture, conditions for which national guidelines would recommend treatment for osteoporosis, actually received that treatment.

Recent data suggest that epigenetic therapies are likely to provide additional clinical benefit to cancer patients when rationally combined with immunotherapeutic drugs, according to a review published in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine receives first national grant to train medical residents

All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine just received its first national grant from the The Hearst Foundations for $100,000. The grant will help fund the exclusive Leadership Executive Academic Development (LEAD) curriculum provided to medical residents in All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine pediatric residency program. LEAD is a two-week program focused on transforming the residents from pediatric physicians to pediatric physician leaders.

Umeå University chemist explores ways to decrease bacterial colonization

Among the bacterial infections that are most difficult to treat, chronic infections associated with bacterial biofilms are one of the most hazardous. Bacterial biofilms are densely packed communities of microbial cells surrounded with secreted polymers. In her doctoral thesis, chemist Shoghik Hakbyan has studied ways to decrease the bacterial colonization at Umeå University in Sweden.

Weaker physical fitness, higher body fat content linked to arterial stiffness in children

Arterial wall stiffness and reduced arterial dilation are the first signs of cardiovascular diseases that can be measured. The Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children Study (PANIC) carried out in the Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Eastern Finland shows that low levels of physical activity, weaker physical fitness and higher body fat content are linked to arterial stiffness already in 6-8 year-old children.
