Higher case volume linked with improved outcomes for catheter-based blood clot removal in LE-DVT patients

Patients who have lower extremity proximal deep vein thrombosis (LE-DVT), or a blood clot in their leg, are increasingly undergoing minimally invasive catheter-based blood clot removal - also referred to as catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) - rather than solely being treated with traditional blood-thinning medications (anticoagulation alone).

New paper describes positive effects of CRAC channel inhibitors in animal models of acute pancreatitis

Researchers from CalciMedica, Inc. and the University of Liverpool today announced the publication of a paper describing positive effects of calcium release-activated calcium (CRAC) channel inhibitors in animal models of acute pancreatitis. The paper, titled "Inhibitors of ORAI1 prevent cytosolic calcium-associated injury of human pancreatic acinar cells and acute pancreatitis in 3 mouse models" appears in the August edition of the journal Gastroenterology.

Novartis announces FDA approval of Odomzo (sonidegib) 200 mg capsules for treatment of laBCC patients

Novartis today announced the US Food and Drug Administration has approved Odomzo (sonidegib, formerly LDE225) 200 mg capsules for the treatment of adult patients with locally advanced basal cell carcinoma (laBCC) that has recurred following surgery or radiation therapy, or those who are not candidates for surgery or radiation therapy.

New Penn study finds link between graduate medical training and brand name statin prescribing

Physicians in training are twice as likely to order a costly brand-name statin (used to lower blood cholesterol levels) when supervised by senior physicians who prefer those medications in their own practice, according to a new study led by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and published online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Quest Diagnostics' second quarter revenue grows by 1.2% to $1.93 billion

Quest Diagnostics Incorporated, the world's leading provider of diagnostic information services, announced today that for the second quarter ended June 30, 2015, adjusted net income was $170 million compared to $157 million for 2014. Adjusted diluted EPS excluding amortization was $1.25 in the second quarter of 2015, compared to $1.19 in 2014. Amortization expense per diluted share was $0.08 in the second quarter of 2015 and $0.11 in 2014.

Danaher's revenue for second quarter 2015 increases 3.5% to $5.1 billion

Danaher Corporation today announced record results for the second quarter 2015. For the quarter ended July 3, 2015, non-GAAP adjusted diluted net earnings per share were $1.08, which reflects the adjustments identified in the attached reconciliation schedule. On a GAAP basis, diluted net earnings for the second quarter were $696 million, or $0.97 per share. Revenue for the second quarter 2015 increased 3.5% to $5.1 billion with core revenues also increasing 3.5%.

Mercy Medical Center named third best hospital in Maryland

U.S. News & World Report has released its annual "Best Hospital" rankings. This 26th annual edition includes information on nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide. U.S. News & World Report named Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore as the third best hospital in Maryland, behind only the academic medical centers at Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland. Mercy also retained its status from last year as the state's top-ranked community hospital.

Medical schools whose mission statements underscore societal good and a desire to train students for service to at-risk populations are more likely to produce physicians who will enter careers in primary care (such as family medicine) and work in medically underserved areas, according to a study by Upstate Medical University researchers published in the June issue of the journal Family Medicine.

A group of 118 of the nation's leading cancer experts have drafted a prescription for reducing the high cost of cancer drugs and voiced support for a patient-based grassroots movement demanding action on the issue. Their recommendations and support are outlined in a commentary, co-authored by the group, in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings.
