3D-printed heart model created by Materialise

Materialise (Nasdaq:MTLS), a pioneer in 3D Printing for medical applications, recently created a 3D-printed heart model for doctors at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to support Bradley White’s case, a 16-year-old boy who was born with a tumor. New standard for U.S. heart transplantation

The Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute has set a new standard for U.S. heart transplantation by completing 117 adult heart transplants and two adult heart-lung transplants, for a total of 119 adult heart transplants in a single year. The previous number set in 2005, was 98 adult heart transplants performed in one year.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons continues to break new ground in patient safety and quality measurement through a new collaboration with the Duke Clinical Research Institute. DCRI will establish a link with STS clinical data and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services claims data. This link will enable participants and researchers using data from the STS National Database to track long-term patient outcomes.

Findings raise prospects for new therapies to protect heart from progressive disease

Some of the most commonly prescribed drugs for the treatment of heart failure are beta-blockers and nitrates, which help to relax blood vessels and decrease the heart's workload. The drugs were thought to produce those effects through distinct molecular pathways, but according to a new study led by scientists at Temple University School of Medicine, both types of drugs may help the failing heart by counteracting the effects of an enzyme known as GRK2.
