A team of researchers from Cleveland Clinic and New York University School of Medicine have found that obesity resulted in as much as 47 percent more life-years lost than tobacco, and tobacco caused similar life-years lost as high blood pressure.

Systematic Review reveals safe levels of caffeine intake

A rigorous, new scientific Systematic Review paper on caffeine safety confirms the results of the widely-cited Health Canada literature review (2003), which concluded that adverse health effects were not associated with caffeine intake levels at ≤400 mg/day for adults (which is the equivalent of about 4 cups of coffee/day, and 90% of Americans typically consume less than this amount, ≤300 mg/day for pregnant women and ≤2.5 mg/kg-day for children and adolescents.

Researchers awarded NIAID grant to develop new tools for eliminating drug-resistant malaria

The University of Maryland School of Medicine has been awarded a $9 million seven-year grant by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to develop new tools to help eliminate drug-resistant malaria in Southeast Asia and other regions where the disease is common.

The World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA) welcomes the publication, which is a follow-up to WHO’s Global Strategy on Viral Hepatitis, and has set the goal to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

Study finds increase in number of prescriptions filled for chronic conditions after Medicaid expansion

During the first one and a half years of the Affordable Care Act, the number of prescriptions filled by adults using Medicaid coverage increased by 19% in states that expanded Medicaid compared to states that did not, according to a new study from a Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health researcher and colleagues.

Spermidine supplement may prolong lifespan, prevent liver fibrosis and cancer

Spermidine - a compound found in foods like aged cheese, mushrooms, soy products, legumes, corn and whole grains - seems to prevent (at least in animal models) liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, which is the most common type of liver cancer. There is also some evidence that it may prolong lifespan, according to a study published recently in the journal Cancer Research.

New behavioral intervention program could help reduce HIV infection rates among Latino men

Men who have sex with men accounted for two thirds of all new HIV infections in the United States, with 26 percent occurring in Latinos, according to 2014 data. If those rates continue, it is estimated that one in four Latino MSM may be diagnosed with HIV during his lifetime.

Scientists at the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health report elevated levels of a pathogen responsible for the tick-borne disease babesiosis in Suffolk County, New York, where rates are the highest in the state. Results are published in the journal mSphere.
