Research finds increased diagnostic activity among men with family history of prostate cancer

The brothers of men with prostate cancer are at an increased risk of prostate cancer diagnosis because of increased diagnostic activity and not necessarily because they carry a genetic mutation that increases risk of the disease, according to a study published online August 19 in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Problems with analytical study design and data misinterpretation leads to biomarker failure: Report

The boom in cancer biomarker investments over the past 25 years has not translated into major clinical success. The reasons for biomarker failures include problems with study design and interpretation, as well as statistical deficiencies, according to an article published online August 12 in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

NAEDI aims to correct survival gap in cancer diagnosis

Cancer Research UK today reveals that as many as 11,000 deaths from cancer could be prevented annually if Great Britain raised its survival figures to match those of the best performing countries in Europe.Cancer Research UK and national cancer director, Professor Mike Richards, believe that the most important reasons for the survival gap include poor awareness of the symptoms of cancer, late presentation to a GP and, late onward referral to hospital.

A team of scientists at GE Global Research, the technology development arm for the GE, has launched a study with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, (MSKCC) one of the world's premier cancer centers, to better understand the early stages of colon cancer. Kevin Empey, President and CEO of Lakeridge Health and Dr. Robert Bell, CEO of the University Health Network are proud to announce the shared management of LH's Laboratory Services with those of UHN. UHN's laboratory currently manages all services for Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital and Toronto General Hospital, and 13 other hospitals. Researchers examine long-term cause-specific mortality among childhood cancer survivors

Follow-up of a group of British childhood cancer survivors indicates they have an increased risk of death from second primary cancers and cardiac and cerebrovascular causes more than 25 years after their initial cancer diagnosis, according to a study in the July 14 issue of JAMA.

20% of Canadians less sympathetic towards lung cancer sufferers

Canadian lung cancer patients are likely to suffer significant stigma due to the disease's link to smoking, a connection that may impact the care and treatment patients receive. According to a 16-country survey carried out by Ipsos MORI on behalf of The Global Lung Cancer Coalition, one in five Canadians admit feeling less sympathetic towards lung cancer sufferers because of its known association with smoking cigarettes and other tobacco products.
