Common genetic risk factor for heart failure in Caucasians also linked to kidney function

Nearly five million Americans live with heart failure, with as many as 700,000 new cases diagnosed each year. In addition to lifestyle factors, scientists have shown that heart failure has a strong heritable component, but identifying the responsible genes has been a major challenge. Now, new research has identified a common genetic risk factor for heart failure in Caucasians that is also linked to kidney function.

Cyndia Charfi, a Ph. D student in biology at Universit- du Qu-bec - Montr-al (UQAM), supported by her thesis supervisors, Professor -ric Rassart, and Adjunct Professor Elsy Edouard, UQAM, Department of Biological Sciences and BIOMED Research Centre, made a major breakthrough in research on B-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia, a disease that occurs most commonly in children.

The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) has announced that Ryan Salinas, now a 2nd-year medical student at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), is the 2010 Lucien Rubenstein Award recipient. The work of Salinas, one of 10 ABTA Medical Student Summer Fellows in 2010, was deemed "outstanding" by the organization's distinguished Scientific Advisory Council.

According to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, exposure to electrical light between dusk and bedtime strongly suppresses melatonin levels and may impact physiologic processes regulated by melatonin signaling, such as sleepiness, thermoregulation, blood pressure and glucose homeostasis.
