Today, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy issued a report discussing the importance of international collaboration in the fight against illegal online drug sellers. As detailed in the Internet Drug Outlet Identification Program Progress Report for State and Federal Regulators: October 2015, there is widespread agreement among multiple countries that Internet sales of medicinal products pose a health risk to their citizens.

FDA initiates NTSO actions for retailers who violated certain restrictions on sale of tobacco products

This week the U.S. Food and Drug Administration filed complaints initiating the first-ever No-Tobacco-Sale Order (NTSO) actions for a group of retailers who have repeatedly violated certain restrictions on the sale and distribution of tobacco products, including sales to minors. Under the law, the FDA may pursue an NTSO against retailers that have a total of five or more repeated violations of those restrictions during compliance inspections within 36 months.

Ensemble models provide accurate real-time estimates of current and impending flu activity

By combining data from a variety of non-traditional sources, a research team led by computational epidemiologists at Boston Children's Hospital has developed predictive models of flu-like activity that provide robust real-time estimates (aka "now-casts") of flu activity and accurate forecasts of flu-like illness levels up to three weeks into the future.

UNM CCC biostatisticians help scientists conduct research on cancer

In contrast to most people, Ji-Hyun Lee, DrPH, doesn't find statistics difficult or boring. For her, statistics is fulfilling because it's how she helps people fight cancer. "People think biostatistics is purely numbers," Lee says, "but my work helps to improve patients' care." She recalls a visit to a hospital patient as a young statistician working for a cystic fibrosis research team.

The fight against tuberculosis is paying off, with this year’s death rate nearly half of what it was in 1990. Nevertheless, 1.5 million people died from TB in 2014.
