Coagadex now approved by FDA for patients with hereditary Factor X deficiency

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Coagadex, Coagulation Factor X (Human), for hereditary Factor X (10) deficiency. Until today's orphan drug approval, no specific coagulation factor replacement therapy was available for patients with hereditary Factor X deficiency.

A study of nearly 400 people finds that those who exhibited more 'dispositional mindfulness', or awareness of and attention to their current feelings and thoughts, were less likely to be obese and had less abdominal fat than people who did not exhibit as much of that awareness.

Study reveals link between TV viewing and adolescents' beliefs about health risks of fast-food consumption

Television programs and commercials displaying fast food consumption that target young people are on the rise. While experts agree that television can entertain and inform, most TV programs and advertisements portray no negative consequences of fast food consumption. New research found that the rise of positive fast food imagery on TV strongly biases the views of children and can lead to negative influences on childhood behavior and values.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute has awarded a research team at Georgia State University's School of Public Health a $2.2 million grant to study the effectiveness of different approaches to reducing child abuse and neglect.

Sleep apnea may increase gout risk

Sleep apnea may increase the risk of developing gout, a new study shows. Among 9865 patients with newly-diagnosed sleep apnea and 43,598 comparators of similar weight, investigators identified 270 new cases of gout over one year of follow-up, resulting in incidence rates of 8.4/1000 and 4.8/1000 person-years, respectively. The increased risk of gout was 60% higher among patients with sleep apnea.

A new and comprehensive study by investigators at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University Medical Center has found that celiac patients are at no increased risk for dementia before or after their diagnosis of celiac disease.

UAMS researchers report positive results from treating Metastatic Merkel-cell carcinoma with idelalisib drug

Identifying a patient's genetic mutation led University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) physician-researcher Ling Gao, M.D., Ph.D., to an existing drug that eliminated the patient's stage IV Merkel-cell carcinoma. Gao's findings, made in collaboration with two other UAMS researchers, were published today in The New England Journal of Medicine.
