The American Board of Addiction Medicine Foundation today announced the accreditation of nine additional fellowship programs to train addiction medicine physicians. With the addition of these programs, the total number of ABAM Foundation accredited training programs has reached 36.

Smokers who have COPD may face increased risk of getting small cell lung cancer

Smokers who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) may face nearly twice the risk of getting small cell lung cancer (SCLC)--the deadliest form of lung cancer--than smokers who don't have COPD, according to a large worldwide study led by researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

New Kaiser Permanente study finds small decline in obesity rates among young people in Southern California

A new study from Kaiser Permanente found a small but significant decline in the percentage of young people who are overweight and obese in Southern California. The decline was seen across all ages, races and ethnicities, but was less pronounced in girls, adolescents, Hispanic and black children, according to the results published today in The Journal of Pediatrics.

UN adopts Sustainable Development Goals to combat ongoing global tobacco epidemic

Today, the United Nations General Assembly formally adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a plan to eradicate global poverty. The goals formally recognize, on a global scale, the negative impact of tobacco consumption on health, wealth, and development and commit member governments to combat the ongoing tobacco epidemic, especially through the implementation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

The Laboratory of Personalized Genomic Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center has been granted full approval by the New York State Department of Health for the Columbia Combined Cancer Panel, (CCCP). This panel queries 467 cancer-related genes and was designed in collaboration with Columbia University Medical Center oncologists.
