It will help better diagnose the cancer type, and enable the development of more effective, and less toxic therapies. But cells have evolved all sorts of sophisticated ways to become cancerous, and identifying the molecules involved and how they function in each type of cancer is a major undertaking.

MedUni Vienna uses new MR technique to classify adenomas

Adenomas are rare liver tumours, a certain percentage of which can become malignant. Using a new MR (magnetic resonance) technique at MedUni Vienna, it is now possible to classify adenomas without subjecting patients to invasive tissue sampling procedures.

The accumulation of spontaneous genetic changes, or mutations, that occur when cells divide can be hastened by exposure to carcinogens such as cigarette smoke (lung cancer) and infectious agents such as the papillomavirus (cervical cancer).

Now, scientists at The Wistar Institute have found a protein that circulates in the blood that appears to be more accurate at detecting non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) than currently available methods used for screening.

New article published in Spanish Journal of Pathology highlights a rare case of Hodgkin's lymphoma

Dr. Jerónimo Forteza, Professor of Pathology and Director of the Valencian Institute of Pathology, Catholic University of Valencia "San Vicente Mártir," recently published an article in the Spanish Journal of Pathology on the case of a patient with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Medicine student Pablo Sánchez Vela performed this diagnostic work under the supervision of Dr. Forteza.

In a clinical study of patients in the United States and China, researchers found that a low-cost, portable, battery-powered microendoscope developed by Rice University bioengineers could eventually eliminate the need for costly biopsies for many patients undergoing standard endoscopic screening for esophageal cancer.

Daratumumab achieves 29.2% overall response rate in heavily pre-treated patients with multiple myeloma

Data from the international, multi-center, open-label, two-part, single-arm Phase 2 MMY2002 (SIRIUS) trial show treatment with single-agent daratumumab – an investigational, human anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody – achieved an overall response rate (ORR) of 29.2 percent (95% CI, 20.8-38.9), as assessed by an independent review committee, in heavily pre-treated patients with multiple myeloma.

Hodgkin's lymphoma treatment can cause late sequelae

Hodgkin's lymphoma--cancer of the lymph nodes--arises in more than 150 children and adolescents in Germany each year. Nine out of ten patients survive the disease, thanks to the highly effective treatments that are now available. Depending on the type of treatment given, however, there may be late sequelae, as discussed by Wolfgang Dörffel and colleagues in an original article in the current issue of Deutsches Ärzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztebl Int 2015; 112: 320-7).
