UAMS researchers identify age-related mechanism as primary cause of osteoporosis

Racial disparities continue in U.S. cancer screening practices

The incidence of advanced breast cancer diagnosis among black women remained 30 percent to 90 percent higher compared to white women between 1992 and 2004, according to new findings by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. In addition, the disparity in the incidence of advance colorectal cancer actually widened over this time period as rates fell among whites but increased slightly among blacks.

Gastric banding surgery offers fewer complications, but more research needed

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery can effectively treat obesity in adolescents and seems to offer a better alternative than gastric bypass surgery, but further study is needed to determine whether it's better than nonsurgical options, a UT Southwestern Medical Center surgeon writes in an editorial in the Feb. 10 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and The Endocrine Group researchers have concluded that the OmniPod® Insulin Management System significantly improved blood glucose control in diabetes patients who previously received insulin through multiple daily injections. Phthalate exposure can affect child's neurobehavioral development, says study

A new study led by Mount Sinai researchers in collaboration with scientists from Cornell University and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has found higher prenatal exposure to phthalates-manmade chemicals that interfere with hormonal messaging-to be connected with disruptive and problem behaviors in children between the ages of 4 and 9 years.

Obese children face increased risk of stroke and heart disease
