Burnout and depression may contribute to major medical errors, says new study

Major medical errors self-reported by American surgeons are strongly related to both burnout and depression. Those findings appear today in the online edition of Annals of Surgery. The Mayo Clinic-led study included collaborators from Johns Hopkins and the American College of Surgeons.

New computational tool may aid surgeons plan for life-saving pediatric operation

A team of researchers at the University of California, San Diego and Stanford University has developed a way to simulate blood flow on the computer to optimize surgical designs. It is the basis of a new tool that may help surgeons plan for a life-saving operation called the "Fontan" surgery, which is performed on babies born with severe congenital heart defects.

Proteon Therapeutics, Inc., has initiated a Phase 1/2 human clinical study of its lead product, PRT-201, in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing surgery for arteriovenous graft (AVG) creation. The AVG study represents Proteon's second human clinical study in hemodialysis patients, previously announcing the initiation of a Phase 1/2 study of PRT-201 in ESRD patients undergoing surgery for arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creation earlier this year.

Study finds depressed or burned out surgeons more likely to commit major error on the job

Surgeons who are burned out or depressed are more likely to say they had recently committed a major error on the job, according to the largest study to date on physician burnout. The new findings suggest that the mental well-being of the surgeon is associated with a higher rate of self-reported medical errors, something that may undermine patient safety more than the fatigue that is often blamed for many of the medical mistakes.

BMI and co-morbidity do not explain racial survival disparity in colon cancer patients

A new study by University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) researchers shows that body-mass index (BMI) and co-existing medical conditions (co-morbidity) do not explain the decreased survival observed among African-Americans compared to Caucasians who also have colon cancer. The study is published online Nov. 23 in Cancer, a journal of the American Cancer Society.

New target may promote development of novel therapies for chronic sinusitis

A protein known to stimulate blood vessel growth has now been found to be responsible for the cell overgrowth in the development of polyps that characterize one of the most severe forms of sinusitis, a study by Johns Hopkins researchers suggests. The finding gives scientists a new target for developing novel therapies to treat this form of the disease, which typically resists all current treatments.

UAB performs complicated eye reconstruction surgery

Singh and the team were practicing in Bundi, in northwestern India. It was a common drill, the coach hitting a golf ball at Singh, trying to keep the ball low. A field hockey ball is about the size of a baseball, and by trying to stop the much smaller and faster moving golf ball, it was thought a goalie could improve his reflexes and timing. Only this time the coach hit the ball too high.
