AVANIR's AVP-923 Phase III STAR trial results published in 'Annals of Neurology' website

AVANIR Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the electronic publication of the results of the pivotal Phase III STAR trial of its investigational drug AVP-923 (dextromethorphan/quinidine) in the Annals of Neurology. The publication entitled "Dextromethorphan Plus Ultra-Low-Dose Quinidine Reduces Pseudobulbar Affect" evaluated two low dose formulations compared to placebo in the treatment of pseudobulbar affect (PBA) in patients with underlying amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or multiple sclerosis (MS).

Pernix completes Macoven acquisition

Pernix Therapeutics Holdings, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company primarily focused on the pediatric market, today announced the acquisition of 100% of the outstanding membership interest in Macoven Pharmaceuticals, L.L.C. for approximately $2.2 million (which includes inventory of approximately $1.2 million), its entry into a $10 million credit facility with Regions Bank and the repurchase of 2,000,000 shares of its common stock from one of its employees in a privately negotiated transaction.

LA community clinics facing budget squeeze; Milwaukee may target benefits of public employees; Seattle Times documents 236 deaths in adult homes

Los Angeles Times: "Stung by a budget stalemate that is costing Los Angeles County community clinics more than $330,000 a day in reimbursements, many clinic managers have been forced to take out loans and contemplate cuts to staff and services. Without the funds from Medi-Cal, the state insurance program for low-income patients, 41 clinics statewide have applied for loans from a fund created in response to the budget impasse.

C-section rates on the rise

According to a California Watch analysis, profit making hospitals across the state are performing Cesarean sections at higher rates than non-profit hospitals. The analysis compiled a database of state birthing records and showed that women were at least 17 percent more likely to have a Cesarean section at a for-profit hospital than at a non-profit or public hospital from 2005 to 2007.
