Data on the effects of coffee on cancer risk have been mixed. However, results of a recent study add to the brewing evidence that drinking coffee protects against cancer, this time against head and neck cancer.

CPRIT awarded $142M in grants to fund cancer research and prevention programs across the state

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas today awarded $142 million in grants to fund innovative cancer research and prevention programs across the state. Today's announcement caps the first year of the Institute's ten year mission. Together with matching funds committed by grant recipients, more than $300 million has been invested this year in Texas' extraordinary endeavor to change the face of cancer.

New online smoking-cessation study launched

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center announced today that it is launching a new online study to help people quit smoking. The study, called WebQuit, is enrolling adult smokers nationwide. Participation is free to eligible individuals.

Experts call on international community to commit attention and resources to cervical cancer prevention

Women's health leaders today called on the international community to commit the resources needed to ensure that women and girls worldwide have equal access to cervical cancer prevention technologies. At the WOMEN DELIVER conference, the Declaration for Universal Access to Cervical Cancer Prevention was issued by leading women's health, cancer and business organizations, including PATH, the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the International Union Against Cancer.

White paper advocates strategies to reduce barriers to HPV vaccination, cervical cancer prevention

The Society of Gynecologic Oncologists has published its third in a series of four papers on a variety of cervical cancer issues and topics featured at "The Future Strategies for Cervical Cancer Prevention: What Do We Need to Do Now to Prepare" Forum. The paper, entitled "Can the Barriers to HPV Vaccination in High-Risk Populations be Overcome?" appears in the June, 2010 issue of Gynecologic Oncology Journal.

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas recently presented a $300,000 check to the University of North Texas Health Science Center. The check was accepted by the UNT Health Science Center Provost Thomas Yorio, Ph.D., and Richard Kurz, Ph.D., dean of the School of Public Health.

B2Discovery rallies business leaders in support of excellence in cancer research

The Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC) of the Universit- de Montr-al launches B2Discovery, a new research funding model that brings together the private sector and the biomedical research community to help accelerate the discovery of new anti-cancer therapeutics. Inspired by B2ten, which contributed to the success of several Canadian athletes at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, B2Discovery's mission is to partner entrepreneurs with IRIC's cancer investigators to finance novel and promising research projects not currently funded by public granting agencies.

Oregon Health & Science University is partnering with the University of Oregon and Harvard Medical School to expedite basic science research into new and existing drugs and compounds that may prevent the complications associated with Fanconi anemia, an inherited condition that can lead to bone marrow failure and cancer.

Weill Cornell Medical College commences construction of 18-story, $650 million Medical Research Building

Weill Cornell Medical College today celebrated the start of construction on its new Medical Research Building, a state-of-the-art facility that will more than double the institution's existing research space. The 18-story, $650 million building is the centerpiece of Weill Cornell's $1.3 billion Discoveries that Make a Difference Campaign, the country's largest for a medical college. A total of $1 billion has been raised toward this goal in a record time of less than four years.

As millions of Americans prepare to enjoy the great outdoors Memorial Day weekend, the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention reminds everyone to practice sun-safe behaviors – pack those wide-brimmed hats in the suitcase. The incidence of melanoma (the most fatal of skin cancers) continues to rise significantly, at a rate faster than any of the seven most common cancers.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center commemorated the signing of legislation requiring the Alabama Department of Public Health to create breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening programs designed to save the lives of thousands of Alabamians in an event held May 19.

152 research and training grants awarded to researchers at 93 institutions nationwide

The American Cancer Society, the largest non-government, not-for-profit funding source of cancer research in the United States, has awarded 152 new national research and training grants totaling $50,717,000 in the first of two grants cycles for 2010. The grants, primarily to early career researchers, cover a broad range of investigator-initiated ideas at 93 institutions nationwide, from whether cadmium exposure increases the risk of endometrial cancer, to studies of plant and bacterial-bourne compounds, to a study on a protein called survivin that could lead to novel drugs targeting prostate cancer.

Study examines impact of tobacco smoke carcinogen on mice

Although tobacco use is widely understood to be one of the leading causes of oral cancer, research on the prevention of tobacco-related oral cancer in experimental animals has traditionally been limited to examining the impact of synthetic carcinogens manufactured especially for cancer research, rather than on observing the effects of carcinogens that occur in tobacco smoke.

Colorectal pre-cancer can be detected through stool DNA testing: Mayo Clinic study

Research teams led by Mayo Clinic have demonstrated for the first time that two types of colorectal pre-cancers can be detected through noninvasive stool DNA testing. The two studies being presented demonstrate that stool DNA testing may be useful for detection of premalignant dysplasia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and of an important type of colorectal pre-cancer called serrated polyps.
