Now, two researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center have developed a mathematical model that will save time, lead to enhanced care, and potentially save lives.

State highlights: NYC to gather bids for its health insurance costs; Texas Cancer Institute tries comeback after controversies

Faced with annual health insurance costs of $6.3 billion, New York City is putting its health care contract out to bid, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday. Bloomberg said the bid has not gone out yet but current health-insurance provider EmblemHealth has already chosen not to seek a rate increase for the next fiscal year (Mathews, 8/2).

Virginia Tech addiction expert receives $3.2 million grant to help smokers quit cigarettes

Warren Bickel, an internationally recognized addiction expert at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, recently received a $3.2-million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse for research on improving self-control in smokers seeking to quit cigarettes. The grant will provide Bickel's team with $573,000 to $716,000 a year over five years to develop innovative new ways to enhance the smokers' ability to abstain from acting on their nicotine cravings.

Federal judge blocks Wisconsin abortion law

A federal judge blocked a Wisconsin abortion law from taking effect until a decision is made about its constitutionality. The law would require that women have an ultrasound before having the procedure, and that doctors who perform abortions have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.
