State highlights: Ore. schools face insurance exchange choice

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. wages are so low they force many of its employees onto the public doles, creating a drag on taxpayers and the economy, according to a new report from the staff of congressional Democrats. The report analyzes data from Wisconsin's Medicaid program, estimating that a single 300-person Wal-Mart Supercenter in that state likely costs taxpayers at least $904,542 per year and could cost up to $1,744,590 per year, or roughly $5,815 per employee (Lazo, 6/7).

Obama touts early success for health law in California

President Obama on Friday highlighted a concentrated, localized strategy to encourage young Americans to enroll in the new health care exchanges. "Competition and choice are pushing down costs in the individual market, just like the law is designed to do," Obama said during remarks in San Jose, Calif. California is one of three states key to the 2010 health care law's expansion of health insurance to all Americans -- but especially young people (Kennedy, 6/7).

Research shows visually impaired individuals have greater risk of diminished balance

UC Davis Health System Eye Center research has found that visually impaired individuals and those with uncorrected refractive error - those who could benefit from glasses to achieve normal vision but don't wear glasses - have a significantly greater risk of diminished balance with their eyes closed on a compliant, foam surface than individuals with normal vision.

Among the many new findings presented at the EAACI-WAO World Allergy and Asthma Congress 2013 in Milan from 22-26 June 2013 is new Australian research providing proof for pre-birth programming of food allergies, showing that prenatal environmental factors may already determine predispositions for food allergies rather than only genetic factors.

Poll finds health law's support sliding

A new Wall Street Journal/NBC survey concludes that more Americans than ever before view the health law as a bad idea. Just as these numbers are rolling out, the White House is launching its own messaging effort -- reaching out to Democrats and Republicans, high-ranking officials and lawmakers -- to get people to sign up for coverage through the overhaul's new online health insurance exchanges.

Ingenol mebutate drug does not offer added benefit over diclofenac/hyaluronic acid gel

The drug ingenol mebutate (trade name: Picato) has been approved in Germany since November 2012 as a gel for the treatment of certain forms of actinic keratosis in adults. In an early benefit assessment pursuant to the Act on the Reform of the Market for Medicinal Products (AMNOG) the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) examined whether this new drug offers an added benefit over diclofenac/hyaluronic acid gel. Such an added benefit cannot be derived from the dossier, however, as the drug manufacturer did not submit any relevant data: it did not cite any studies that directly compared ingenol mebutate with diclofenac/hyaluronic acid gel, and the method chosen by the manufacturer for an indirect comparison was unsuitable.
