WHO report on road safety urges governments to create, enforce driving laws, vehicle safety standards

"The Global Status Report on Road Safety 2013, released Thursday in Geneva by the World Health Organization, found that only 28 countries of the 182 surveyed had adequate laws for drinking and driving, speeding, and use of motorcycle helmets, seat belts and child restraints," the New York Times' "Wheels" blog reports (Mohn, 3/14).

Small percentage of adults who receive rapid HIV treatment following infection might achieve 'functional cure,' French researchers say

"Rapid treatment after HIV infection may be enough to 'functionally cure' about a 10th of those diagnosed early, say researchers in France," who "have been analyzing 14 people who stopped therapy, but have since shown no signs of the virus resurging," BBC News reports (Gallagher, 3/15).

"Now, with a leader of the [Muslim] Brotherhood's political arm in Egypt's presidential palace and its members dominating Parliament, some deeply patriarchal views the organization has long taught its members are spilling into public view," the New York Times reports, noting a statement released this week by the Brotherhood objecting to "a proposed United Nations declaration to condemn violence against women."

Noting that Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in his annual letter "argued that it is essential to carefully measure progress in innovation and global health," Stefano Bertozzi, director of HIV at the Gates Foundation, writes in a SciDev.Net opinion piece, "This is because while measuring the quantity of interventions is important, we also need to determine which interventions -- and which approaches to them -- create the greatest long-term impact."
