Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to high levels of asbestos fibers.

ADAO applauds U.S. Senate for introduction of resolution recognizing National Asbestos Awareness Week

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization, combining education, advocacy and community as the largest U.S. organization serving as the voice of asbestos victims, today applauds Senator Max Baucus and cosponsors for introducing a resolution that declares the first week of April as "National Asbestos Awareness Week" and seeks to "raise public awareness about the prevalence of asbestos-related diseases and the dangers of asbestos exposure."

Scientists to present research on RMI ability to classify lung, kidney tumors at USCAP meeting

Clinical researchers from Cornell Weil Medical School and University of Chicago Medical School will present research conducted on Raman Molecular Imaging's ability to differentiate diagnostic dilemmas in lung and kidney tumors at the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology's 100th Annual Meeting, Feb. 26-March 4 at the Henry B. Enrollment stopped in one of two global necitumumab Phase III studies in NSCLC

Asbestos removal from schools poorly handled

Queensland government’s builder - QBuild’s handling of asbestos at a north Queensland school is inappropriate says a report. After a painter at the Mackay West State School identified asbestos in December 2009, the QBuild workers came in to decontaminate the area but they did not wear protective clothing and removed dust with a domestic vacuum cleaner.

People exposed to North Dakota road materials face increase risk of developing mesothelioma

New data shows that people exposed to the mineral erionite found in the gravel of road materials in North Dakota may be at significantly increased risk of developing mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer most often associated with asbestos exposure, according to research presented at the 2010 Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology.

Collegium Ramazzini repeats calls for total global ban on all asbestos

Scientists at the Collegium Ramazzini in Modena, Italy have repeated calls for a total ban on all asbestos across the globe. Writing in the International Journal of Environment and Health, the Collegium points out that just 52 nations have banned asbestos but a large number still use, import and export asbestos and asbestos-containing products.

Phase 1 study results of Aduro BioTech's CRS-207 presented at AACR Conference on Tumor Immunology

Aduro BioTech, a clinical-stage immunotherapy company, is pleased to announce the presentation of the CRS-207 Phase 1 study at the AACR Special Conference on Tumor Immunology in Miami, Florida by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Dung Le of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. Dr. Le reported that CRS-207 intravenous administration was well tolerated in subjects with advanced, treatment-refractory cancers. Dr. Le also reported evidence of immune activation and that 6 out of 17 end-stage cancer patients lived 15 months or longer.

DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson issued a recall on its ASR XL Acetabular System (a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement surgery) and ASR Hip Resurfacing System (a partial hip replacement that involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur) -- both of which have been used in hip replacement surgery.

Asbestos found in Queensland schools

Asbestos, known to be the cause of malignant mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer for which there currently is no cure, is still found in the playground of Tewantin State School in Tewantin, Queensland, Australia. Since the beginning of 2009 asbestos has been reported numerous times at the school. Repeated exposures to the toxic material over 20 to 50 years may lead to this cancer.
