Orlando Health's clinicians provide hospital-level care in patient's home

Instead of admitting patients to medical units at the hospital, clinicians at Orlando Regional Medical Center are providing health care to patients in the comfort of their homes. The new twist on modern medicine is being piloted in a project to provide hospital-level care in a patient's home through home visits, videoconferencing (virtual visit) and telemonitoring (remote vital signs monitoring).

Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland is ranked 10th in the nation for research grants from the National Institutes of Health to children's hospitals. In 2012, Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland received more than $15 million in awards from the NIH for 25 separate research grants - a 20.4 percent increase in funding compared to 2011.

Research findings could lead to new treatments for lung disorders in premature babies

Researchers at Yale School of Medicine have made major discoveries that could lead to new treatments for lung disorders in premature babies. In a mouse study, the team located key molecules that switch on stress pathways in preterm lung disorders, and also found that when parts of these pathways were blocked with a pain drug, lung damage was prevented or reversed.

Study demonstrates effectiveness of laborist' obstetrical care

Biogen Idec and Swedish Orphan Biovitrum (Sobi) released data that confirmed the ability of investigational recombinant factors VIII Fc fusion protein (rFVIIIFc) and IX Fc fusion protein (rFIXFc) to provide long-lasting protection from bleeding with fewer injections than are required with the current standard of care for people with hemophilia.

Study shows how NCH guidelines improve quality of life for extremely premature infants

For the last decade, prematurity has been the leading cause of infant mortality in the United States. As a result of prematurity many infants enter this world too early with a small chance of survival. In order to help treat these extremely premature infants, physicians at Nationwide Children's Hospital developed a set of guidelines tailored to meet the needs of these tiny infants, some born up to four months early.
