AACR to host its first Frontiers in Basic Cancer Research Meeting

The American Association for Cancer Research will host its first Frontiers in Basic Cancer Research Meeting in Boston from Oct. 8-11, 2009. The meeting is expected to draw nearly 500 leading scientists to present on high-profile topics like epigenetics, metastasis and systems biology, and create synergies among the many subfields of basic science.

2009 ASH Visitor Training Program to build hematologic capacity in developing countries

The American Society of Hematology (ASH) is proud to announce the participants in the 2009 ASH Visitor Training Program, which builds hematologic capacity in developing countries. Through this program, hematologists and medical professionals from developing countries receive valuable clinical, laboratory, or technological training on a specific topic at a host institution under the mentorship of an ASH member anywhere in the world.

Eric Boerwinkle receives $26 million federal stimulus grant to identify genetic factors influencing common diseases

Eric Boerwinkle, Ph.D., a professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, has received a $26 million federal stimulus grant to lead an effort to pinpoint genetic factors affecting the risk of heart, lung and blood diseases.

Hyper-SAGE with MRI sensitivity, a promising tool for in vivo diagnostics and molecular imaging

A new technique in Magnetic Resonance Imaging dubbed "Hyper-SAGE" has the potential to detect ultra low concentrations of clincal targets, such as lung and other cancers. Development of Hyper-SAGE was led by one of the world's foremost authorities on MRI technology, Alexander Pines, a chemist who holds joint appointments with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California, Berkeley.

World’s first engineered T cell receptor trial opens with new cellular therapy for HIV

Researchers at Adaptimmune Limited and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, have announced the approval of an Investigational New Drug (IND) application from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and opening for enrolment of the first ever study using patients’ cells carrying an engineered T cell receptor to treat HIV (SL9 HA-GAG-TCR). The trial may have important implications in the development of new treatments for HIV potentially slowing – or even preventing – the onset of AIDS.

LeVOCC air purification system destroys the PR8 strain of the H1N1 virus

LeVOCC, Inc. today announced that independent laboratory testing has conclusively demonstrated that the LeVOCCTM air purification system successfully destroys a strain of the H1N1 virus. Testing was conducted using the Puerto Rico 8 (PR8) strain of the H1N1 virus. This strain is an influenza A H1N1 seasonal strain and is a valid representative of all H1N1 strains.

Genomic Health's Oncotype DX is the only commercially available breast cancer test that employs manual microdissection following review by a board certified surgical pathologist with breast expertise to predict a patient's benefit from chemotherapy and risk of disease recurrence.
