President's bioethics commission names international panel to review whether U.S. rules protect clinical trial participants in U.S., abroad

"Prompted by concerns about an unethical U.S.-sponsored study in the 1940s," the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues on Tuesday announced the formation of an international panel "that will examine whether current rules adequately protect volunteers in global clinical trials," Science's "ScienceInsider" blog reports.

Rural women seek breast cancer screenings for the good of their families

A new study published in the Journal of Consumer Affairs finds that women from rural populations are motivated to seek breast cancer prevention screenings primarily out of concern for the long-term well being of their families. The study shows that by appealing to their strength as caretakers doctors can encourage their rural patients to perform breast health self-examinations, get mammograms, and to talk with doctors about their breast health.

Turmeric may be 'the right spice' to fight colon cancer

Turmeric, a bright yellow spice from south Asia belonging to the ginger family, is the main ingredient in curries - and ancient wisdom suggests that it's also good for your health.
