Bans on using credit cards to pay for cigarettes bought on Internet sites - combined with bans on commercial shippers delivering the products - appear to have effectively reduced the size and reach of the online cigarette sales industry, a new University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill study shows.

Gastric bypass surgery appears to lead to better long-term results including greater weight loss, resolution of diabetes and improved quality of life compared with sleeve gastrectomy and "lap-band" surgery, according to two reports in the February issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

GE Healthcare, CDC collaborate to explore efficacy of actionable health alerts

After a full year of feasibility studies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is taking a significant step toward providing public health information at the point-of-care. CDC is collaborating with GE Healthcare, a unit of General Electric Company, to explore the efficacy of actionable health alerts, delivered instantly to a physician's electronic medical record.

Sanofi Pasteur, International Vaccine Institute support Dengue Vaccine Initiative

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of sanofi-aventis Group, announced today that it is partnering with the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) to support the recently launched Dengue Vaccine Initiative (DVI). Sanofi Pasteur and the IVI will aim to raise awareness and to work to move dengue vaccination higher on the global health agenda.

In the Gulf states rates of heart disease are rising with the economy

Rapid improvement in the socio-economic conditions of the Gulf states has been followed by lifestyle changes now contributing to high rates of cardiovascular disease. Professor Hani Najm, President of the Saudi Heart Association whose annual conference begins 21 February 2011, describes risk factor prevalence rates as "extremely high", particularly in the cities of Saudi Arabia.

Canadian Cancer Society calls for legislation to ban cosmetic pesticides

With a new poll showing more than 70 per cent of British Columbians believe exposure to cosmetic pesticides increases their risk to cancer and threatens the environment, the Canadian Cancer Society wants all leadership candidates to pledge introduction of legislation banning cosmetic pesticides.

Canadian Cancer Society praises new, enhanced cigarette package warnings

Today, Health Canada released a set of new picture health warnings for cigarette and little cigar packages. The new labels include 16 warnings that will cover 75 per cent of the package front and back, eight additional messages to be printed inside the package (or on an insert), and four toxic emission messages for the side panel.

The governor of Massachusetts proposed changes on Thursday to the state's comprehensive healthcare program, one often seen as a prototype for national reforms, to attempt to bring rising costs under control. The plan would give the U.S. state more authority to scrutinize fees paid to hospitals and doctors, reform the current standard by which healthcare providers are compensated and enact medical malpractice reform.

New tuberculosis vaccine provides better protection

Nele Festjens and Nico Callewaert of VIB and Ghent University have improved the efficacy of the vaccine for tuberculosis. The new vaccine affords - as already proven in mice - better protection against the disease. The development of a new tuberculosis vaccine is a priority in the fight against the disease which claims the lives of 1.7 million people each year. The current vaccine provides only partial protection.
