JKTG Foundation announces over $160K in awards to support next generation of health policy research

Today, the Jayne Koskinas Ted Giovanis Foundation announced over $160K in awards to support the next generation of health policy research and promote better healthcare for patients. Four graduate researchers in the field of health policy and administration at Brown University, Georgetown University, Harvard University and The Johns Hopkins University received Dissertation Support Grants (DSGs) to aid their research.

Myriad Genetics and Tufts Health Plan sign agreement to cover Prolaris® for members with localized prostate cancer

Myriad Genetics, Inc. (NASDAQ: MYGN) has announced that it has signed a three-year contract with Tufts Health Plan through which the plan will provide coverage of Prolaris® for members diagnosed with localized prostate cancer. Prolaris is the first and only biopsy test validated against prostate cancer specific mortality.

Understanding HCV disease progression rates among PWID

The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a chronic blood-borne viral infection that affects an estimated 160 million people, or 2-3% of the population world-wide. Alarmingly, chronic HCV infection accounts for one-quarter of the cases of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). If HCV is left untreated, chronic liver disease will occur in 60-70% of the cases, cirrhosis in 5-20% of the cases, and 1-5% will die from decompensated cirrhosis or HCC.

Although children with high health care needs represent a small percentage of the overall pediatric population, they account for a large percentage of pediatric health care costs, including up to 40% of pediatric hospital charges. In recent years, there has been more information available about the medical care received by these children, but generally studies have been limited to care provided in hospital settings.

Citing an analysis of more than 26,000 Maryland Medicaid claims, Johns Hopkins researchers report evidence that poor women with recent complications during their pregnancies are using the emergency room at higher rates after delivery and may not be getting the postpartum care and follow-up they need to prevent further health problems.

BMC significantly reduces emergency wait time, improves SCD care for pediatric patients

Boston Medical Center has significantly reduced the amount of time that pediatric patients experiencing pain from sickle cell disease (SCD) wait before receiving pain medication when they come to the emergency department. The hospital's quality improvement initiative cut the wait time by more than 50 percent, from an average of 56 minutes to 23 minutes, from triage to administration of the first dose of pain medication.

Health care disparities continue to persist in Washington state

The Washington Health Alliance released today a new report revealing disparities in how health care is delivered across race, ethnicity and language. Findings reveal that disparities in care are a continuing problem in Washington state. The report, the third of its kind that the Alliance has released, relies upon Medicaid data covering more than 680,000 enrollees.
