New global plan for elimination of TB

The world could be on its way towards eliminating tuberculosis (TB) if governments and donors fully invest in a plan released today by the Stop TB Partnership. The global plan to stop TB 2011-2015: transforming the fight towards elimination of tuberculosis for the first time identifies all the research gaps that need to be filled to bring rapid TB tests, faster treatment regimens and a fully effective vaccine to market.

Study finds increase in hospitalizations for children due to ATV-related injuries

All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are associated with a significant and increasing number of hospitalizations for children in the U.S., according to a new report by the Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Over a nine- year period (1997-2006) hospitalizations for ATV injuries increased 150 percent among youth younger than 18 years, with important demographic variations.

USAID awards $15 million grant to Tufts University for CRSP program

Eileen T. Kennedy, DSc, Dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University announced today that the school has been awarded two grants totaling $15 million by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The USAID "Leader with Associates (LWA) Award" was granted to the school to serve as the Management Entity for a new Nutrition Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP) in Africa and Asia. This is the first CRSP to be awarded by USAID in nearly 25 years.

Kuwait Healthy Life Study to examine metabolic health in children

In the face of a dramatic worldwide increase in adolescent obesity and Type 2 diabetes, The Forsyth Institute today announced a research alliance with the Dasman Diabetes Institute of Kuwait to initiate studies that could lay a scientific basis for prevention. This collaboration, called The Kuwait Healthy Life Study, will examine conditions in children that predispose them to obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
