Training and ergonomic advice are more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections in treating tennis elbow, and give fewer side effects. This is the conclusion of a thesis presented at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Breakthrough with mutant gene that causes familial ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that eventually destroys most motor neurons, causing muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body. There is no cure and the current treatment has only a moderate effect on the march of the disease, which typically kills within three to five years. This week in PNAS, a team of Brandeis scientists reports an innovative approach to treating the most common form of familial ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Automatic behaviors are stored in frontal cortex

Some people may excel at riding a bike, tying a tie, or playing the piano, but those same people may find it difficult to explain or teach those skills to someone else. These motor skills are learned in one part of the brain, whereas classroom instruction and information read in a book are acquired in another area of the brain, explained F. Gregory Ashby, professor and chair of UC Santa Barbara's Department of Psychology. This second area of learning is the frontal cortex the area immediately behind the forehead -- where executive function is located.

American Specialty Health and Healthyroads move to San Diego's Sorrento Mesa business district

It's moving month for health and wellness company American Specialty Health Incorporated (ASH) and its subsidiaries, including wellness company Healthyroads. ASH will be vacating its 156,000 square feet of existing office space in downtown San Diego and transitioning to a 20 percent larger campus environment, comprised of an 81,000 square-foot building to house Healthyroads and a 107,000 square foot building for ASH's other programs. The new buildings, which ASH will occupy for the next 10 years, are located in San Diego's Sorrento Mesa business district.

High-intensity exercise video game to improve health of middle aged men

Sedentary middle-aged men on Teesside in the North East of England could soon be using a high-intensity exercise video game to improve their health. For researchers at Teesside University have developed an alternative to the Nintendo Wii which doesn't allow users to cheat. Now they plan to put it to the test by getting middle-aged members of workingmen's clubs to take part in 'virtual' boxing matches with a computer-generated opponent.

Early intervention is key to proper healing of foot pain due to sports activities

According to Donna's doctor, Kris DiNucci, DPM, FACFAS, a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, the conditions plaguing her are common among court-playing athletes. "Because playing tennis requires quick, repetitive foot movements and continuous forefoot pressure, neuromas, (a thickening of the nerve tissue in the foot from compression) are common," DiNucci says. "In addition, those same movements can cause athletes to develop plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the strong ligament that extends from the heel to the toes," he added.

We also imitate each other's speech patterns, including inflections, talking speed and speaking style. Sometimes, we even take on the foreign accent of the person to whom we're talking, leading to embarrassing consequences.

Athletes who undergo tissue transplant surgery for knee damage can return to sports: Study

Athletes with bone and cartilage knee damage who are treated with transplanted tissue can return to sports after surgery, according to a Hospital for Special Surgery study reported at the annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, held July 15-18 in Providence, Rhode Island. The study (abstract 8970) overturns the widely held belief that patients who undergo this surgery do not return to athletics.
