Adult stem cell transplant therapy may help prevent amputations from PAD

Grant Medical Center recently completed the nation's first published study of a new procedure that may give hope to millions of patients facing lower limb amputations from peripheral arterial disease (PAD). PAD is a painful circulatory problem in the legs that affects 10 million Americans. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as stroke, amputation and death.

Histone modifications associated with pancreatic cancer development and progression

Specific chemical modifications to proteins called histones, which are found in the nucleus of cells and act as spools around which DNA is wound, can be used to predict prognosis and response to treatment in subsets patients with pancreatic cancer, a study by researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center has found.

European Patent Office affirms validity of EuroMed's patent for Wrinkle-Resistant Wound dressings

EuroMed Inc. and Jentec Inc. today announced an important victory affirming the validity of a key patent, European patent number 1020198 (U.S. corresponding patent number 6878385) for Wrinkle-Resistant Wound dressings. In a ruling issued by the European Patent Office in Berlin, Germany, both of the grounds for opposition raised by the plaintiff, a prominent wound care manufacturer (i.e., extension of subject-matter, lack of ‘inventive step’ or sufficient originality) were not adequate cause to challenge the patent.

Researchers find differences in the biology of lung cancer between men and women

An analysis of genetic and clinical data for nearly 800 patients with non-small cell lung cancer has identified differences in genetic characteristics that are associated with age and sex specific patterns of increased or decreased recurrence-free survival, according to a study in the February 10 issue of JAMA.

Wound complications in cesarean delivery closure: Subcuticular sutures safer than staples

In a study to be presented today at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's (SMFM) annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting -, in Chicago, researchers will present findings that there were less complications for women, after having a cesarean delivery, if sutures were used instead of staples to close the wound.

The International NPWT Expert Panel is drafting recommendations for a range of NPWT indications and techniques that reflect the body of NPWT published clinical evidence.

RECOTHROM topical hemostat exhibits low rate of anti-product antibody formation

ZymoGenetics, Inc., today announced the publication of pooled safety and immunogenicity observations from eight clinical trials of RECOTHROM in the February issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. The authors concluded that RECOTHROM is a well-tolerated topical hemostatic agent in numerous surgical settings and has a low rate of anti-product antibody formation. In the pooled data from all trials, less than one percent of treated patients developed product-specific antibodies. None of the antibodies neutralized native coagulation proteins.
