Pharmacies launch Dispose My Meds campaign to help consumers safely dispose unused medications

Nearly 800 community pharmacies in 40 states are making it easier than ever for consumers to safely dispose of unused patient medications at their local pharmacy, the National Community Pharmacists Association and Sharps Compliance, Inc. announced today.

UMDNJ researchers receive $2.1M, four-year grant from National Cancer Institute

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Public Health has received a $2.1 million, four-year grant from the National Cancer Institute. The grant will be used to develop and implement an innovative sampling approach designed to improve knowledge about tobacco use by young adults and associated use risk factors.

Weight gain near time of prostate surgery doubles risk of cancer recurrence

Johns Hopkins epidemiologists say that prostate cancer patients who gain five or more pounds near the time of their prostate surgery are twice as likely to have a recurrence of their cancer compared with patients whose weight is stable.

Screening rates for skin cancer low among middle-aged and older Caucasian adults: CINJ study

Among people over 50, those who did not finish high school or have not recently had common cancer screenings such as a mammogram, prostate-specific antigen test or colorectal cancer screening, are also less likely to be screened for skin cancer.

The Sacramento Bee: An analysis of financial data from 300 California hospitals "shows they collected $25 billion from insurance companies between September 2008 and October 2009 - an increase of more than a third since 2005. Hospitals are charging insurance companies, and by extension their customers, billions of dollars for expenses not directly related to care.

A tobacco company's new, dissolvable nicotine pellet--which is being sold as a tobacco product, but which in some cases resembles popular candies--could lead to accidental nicotine poisoning in children, according to a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health, the Northern Ohio Poison Control Center, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.

Trans fats back on the agenda in UK

Dariush Mozzaffarian and Meir J Stamper, wrote an article in the British Medical Journal urging the government to ban industrial trans fatty acids or TFAs. This adds to the plea of doctors and medical charities across the country, who want to follow the example of Denmark and New York City where TFAs have been eradicated without affecting the price, taste or availability of products.

Increasing Kansas' tobacco tax by $1 will bring in $74.7M revenue

Newly announced budget projections show the need to raise Kansas' cigarette tax by $1, according to a coalition of public health groups. Studies show increasing the cigarette tax by $1 would bring in $74.7 million in needed revenue, while raising the tax at a similar rate on smokeless tobacco and other tobacco products would raise an additional $23 million.
