Four Washington-based teams of investigators will receive up to $150,000 each to support commercial development of new health and health-care products, the Life Sciences Discovery Fund announced today.

Three Georgia Tech projects to receive NSF's EFRI grants

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $6 million to fund three projects involving researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Each four-year, $2 million grant was awarded through the NSF's Division of Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation.

UNC professor wins 2011 PECASE award for research into alcohol addiction

During a White House ceremony next month, Thomas L. Kash, PhD, assistant professor in the department of pharmacology and the UNC Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine will receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

Journal of Vascular Surgery publishes Atrium's COBEST Trial on aorto-iliac disease

Atrium Medical Corporation today announced the publication of the COBEST Trial by the Journal of Vascular Surgery. COBEST (Covered Versus Balloon Expandable Stent Trial) was an independent, landmark, prospective, multi center, randomized, controlled clinical trial that has demonstrated that Atrium's proprietary balloon expandable covered stent technology is superior to traditional bare metal stents for the treatment of aorto-iliac disease.

Enrollment begins in Boston Scientific's vagal nerve stimulation trial for heart failure

Boston Scientific Corporation has enrolled the first patients in its NECTAR-HF (NEural Cardiac TherApy foR Heart Failure) clinical trial. NECTAR-HF is a prospective, randomized, international clinical feasibility study designed to assess preliminary safety and efficacy of chronic vagal nerve stimulation in heart failure patients.

New process makes linear peptides circular

Peptides and proteins have long been an attractive class of drug candidates because of their natural involvement in cellular processes and fewer potential side effects. Dr. Andrei Yudin, Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto, has developed a new and effective process that makes linear peptides circular, which allows these molecules, called macrocycles, to enter cells more effectively and increase their stability compared to linear peptides.

Study reports positive effect of RESPeRATE on CHF patients

InterCure Ltd., a medical device company publicly traded on the Tel-Aviv Stock Exchange, today announced that European Journal of Heart Failure, a peer reviewed medical journal of the European Society of Cardiology, published the results of a 72-patients, randomized, controlled study which demonstrated that device-guided respiratory modulation with RESPeRATE applied at the home setting can significantly relieve symptoms of heart failure in elderly patients.
