APHA urges Americans to be prepared for any kind of emergency

Setting the clocks on Nov. 1 because of daylight saving time gives us a little extra time to think about preparing for emergencies. Since Mother Nature is known to throw us a curveball when we least expect it, the American Public Health Association is urging Americans to be ready for any kind of emergency such as blizzards, floods, blackouts or influenza.

New public health tool to identify all Tier 1 candidates for H1N1 vaccination

Practice Fusion Inc. (www.practicefusion.com), the free, web-based electronic health record (EHR) for physicians, today implemented a first-of-its-kind tool that allows its physician-users to immediately and accurately identify all Tier 1 candidates for H1N1 vaccination from their patient populations using criteria published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

FDA purchases Waters ACQUITY UPLC Systems for protecting the U.S. food supply

Waters Corporation announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), College Park, MD recently purchased nine Waters® ACQUITY UltraPerformance LC® (UPLC®) Systems to support its priority to protect the U.S. food supply by monitoring domestically-produced and imported food sold in interstate commerce.

IOM: More fruits and vegetables should be included in school meal programs

The United Fresh Produce Association applauds the Institute of Medicine’s School Meals: Building Blocks for Healthy Children Report released today. Increasing both the amount and the variety of vegetables and fruits that schools offer in meals is one of IOM’s top recommendations contained in the report for improving the healthfulness of school meals.

Health care providers should assist patients in breaking the smoking habit

More than a quarter of cancer survivors who still smoke have not been advised to quit smoking by their health care providers in the last year, according to a study published by researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center in the current issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
