Scientists discover why cerebellar granule cell neurons in A-T patients fail to repair DNA damage

A team of scientists, led by Stuart Lipton, M.D., Ph.D., professor and director of the Neuroscience and Aging Research Center at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, recently discovered why cerebellar granule cell neurons in patients suffering from ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) were unable to repair DNA damage and thus died.

Vigilant announces completion of $2 million oversubscribed Series A financing

Vigilant Biosciences, Inc., developer of the "rinse and spit" test for assessing early risk of oral cancer, today announced the successful completion of a $2.0 million, oversubscribed Series A financing. The company received $2.3 million in total proceeds, including a $300,000 loan from the Florida Institute for the Commercialization of Public Research Seed Capital Acceleration Program.

Smokers find difficult to savor bitter taste of caffeine, says study

Smokers and those who have quit cannot fully appreciate the full flavor of a cup of coffee, because many cannot taste the bitterness of their regular caffeine kick. This is the finding of a study led by Nelly Jacob of the Piti--Salp-tri-re Hospital APHP in France, published in Springer's journal Chemosensory Perception.
