DFG announces establishment of eleven new Collaborative Research Centres

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) will establish eleven new Collaborative Research Centres (CRC) as of 1 January 2011. This decision was made recently by the responsible Grants Committee at its autumn meeting in Bonn. The new CRCs will receive a total of - 94.4 million (including a 20 percent programme allowance for indirect project costs) for an initial funding period of four years.

FDA clears BG Medicine's Galectin-3 test to identify high risk patients with cardiovascular disease

BG Medicine, Inc., a U.S.-based life sciences company, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared the company's Galectin-3 test for use in conjunction with clinical evaluation as an aid to assess the prognosis of patients diagnosed with chronic heart failure. This marks the first time the FDA has cleared a test to measure galectin-3 blood levels, and is the first novel cardiac test cleared by the FDA in five years.

Parkinson Society Canada awards Quebec scientists $573,384 for research

Quebec Parkinson researchers receive a record $573,384 in funding from Parkinson Society Canada to increase their efforts to identify the causes of this degenerative brain disease for which there is currently no cure. Mimetogen initiates MIM-D3 Phase II clinical trial for dry eye disease

Mimetogen Pharmaceuticals Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing novel small molecule compounds that mimic the effects of neurotrophins, today announced that it has initiated the first human clinical trial evaluating MIM-D3, a mimetic of nerve growth factor (NGF), in a Phase II clinical trial in patients with moderate to severe dry eye disease. Interim results from H.P. Acthar Gel study in patients with advanced diabetic nephropathy

On November 20 at the American Society of Nephrology 43rd Annual Meeting, interim results presented from an ongoing, randomized prospective study conducted independently by James A. Tumlin, MD, at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga indicated that 9 of 15 patients (60%) with advanced diabetic nephropathy who are currently enrolled in the study and have completed or are still undergoing a six month course of treatment with H.P. Acthar ® Gel have exhibited a clinically significant decrease in proteinuria and achieved stabilized renal function.
