New cancer study finds benefit in old therapy

Cancer patients who used a 5,000-year-old combination of gentle exercise and meditation experienced significantly higher wellbeing levels, improved cognitive functioning and less inflammation compared to a control group, new University of Sydney research has found.

Nerve stimulation device approved for pain

The Medtronic Inc. has won the CE Mark approval for a peripheral nerve stimulation device for treating chronic back pain. This medical device maker from Minneapolis, Minn. said the implantable device will fit into its neurostimulation business, which operates out of the company's restorative therapies division. That unit was responsible for about $5.42 billion in sales during the nine-month period ended Jan. 28.

Galectin-3 research uncovers new use for Modified Citrus Pectin in cardiovascular, heart disease

In a new important research study out of the UK, scientists found that the specific form of Modified Citrus Pectin developed by Isaac Eliaz, M.D. interrupts deadly kidney fibrosis by binding to galectin-3 molecules, decreasing the effects of inflammation and fibrosis in acute kidney injury.

Asymptomatic patients do not benefit from CT angiography screening

Coronary computed tomographic angiography, which can detect plaque buildup in heart vessels, is sometimes used as a screening tool to assess the risk for a heart attack. However, the usefulness of the test on low-risk patients who do not have coronary symptoms, such as chest pain, has been unclear.

Altor receives NHLBI SBIR grant to complete ALT-836 second Phase 2 trial in ALI/ARDS

Altor BioScience Corporation announced today that the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute has awarded Altor a Small Business Innovation Research Phase II Competing Renewal Grant. The award of over $3.18 MM over three years will support Altor's efforts to complete a second Phase 2 clinical trial using ALT-836, an antibody-based tissue factor antagonist, as a therapy to treat patients with infection-induced acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome.

VBL to present updated VB-111 Phase 1 trial results in advanced metastatic cancer at ASCO 2011

Inotuzumab ozogamicin achieves over 50% response rate against acute lymphoblastic leukemia

An antibody packaged with a potent chemotherapy drug to selectively destroy acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells eradicated or greatly reduced the disease for 61 percent of 46 patients in a phase II study. It will be presented at the 47th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago June 3-7.

A New York Times "Week In Review" article examines how the results of a recent study showing combination antiretroviral therapy can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by 96 percent "reopens old questions" about the rightsof patients to refuse therapy and whether doctors, in the interest of public health, should force patients to start treatment.

Vertex Incivek receives FDA approval for treatment of chronic hepatitis C

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Incivek treat certain adults with chronic hepatitis C infection. Incivek is used for patients who have either not received interferon-based drug therapy for their infection or who have not responded adequately to prior therapies. Incivek is approved for use with interferon therapy made up of peginterferon alfa and ribavirin.

In the recent 4th World Conference on Pulmonary Hypertension held by the WHO, PH was classified into five groups based on its causes, highlighting both the magnitude of conditions associated with PH and how little we know of the etiology in many cases.
