Supreme Court to hear case on overcrowding and medical needs of Calif. prisoners; Ohio state employees have unusual situation covering adult children

Agreeing to hear an appeal from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the U.S. Supreme Court said Monday it will decide whether the state can be forced to release 46,000 inmates — more than one-fourth of its prison population — to relieve overcrowding. The justices said they would hear the case in the fall and rule early next year.

Bill Gates, co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Carlos Slim, the "Mexican telecom magnate" and founder of the Carlos Slim Institute, announced Monday that they would work with Spain on a $150 million health initiative for people in Central America and Mexico, Agence France-Presse reports.

Robert Zucker, Ph.D., director of the University of Michigan Addiction Research Center, and the Substance Abuse Section in the Department of Psychiatry, has been named recipient of the 31st annual Research Society on Alcoholism Distinguished Researcher Award. The award is given to an individual whose research has made significant contributions to the understanding of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, and whose body of work demonstrates leadership in the field.

The State of Wisconsin has expanded the State's care for children with autism through its Children's Long-Term Support Medicaid Waiver, which now covers a family's use of the Rethink Autism program. This will be an important source of continued services for families who are no longer receiving intensive services.

Researchers reported today that Soliris® (eculizumab), a first-in-class terminal complement inhibitor developed by Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc., may provide clinical benefits to patients with thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) resulting from uncontrolled complement activation. TMA, the formation of blood clots in capillaries and small arteries, can lead to life-threatening damage in multiple organs including kidney failure, thrombocytopenia (abnormally low platelet count) and anemia.

Studying stress signaling systems in animal brains, neuroscience researchers found that females are more sensitive to low levels of an important stress hormone and less able to adapt to high levels than males.
