California Institute chemistry professor receives ACS award for 'ultrafast-motion' imaging

Zewail, Ph.D., 1999 Chemistry Nobel Laureate and Linus Pauling Professor of Chemistry & Professor of Physics at the California Institute of Technology, today will receive the 2011 Priestley Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.

CytRx to present bafetinib preclinical study results at AACR Annual Meeting

Drugs for prevention of breast cancer

According to an international panel of cancer experts, women at high risk of developing breast cancer should be given preventative drugs. The experts write in the Lancet Oncology adding, drugs such as tamoxifen could reduce the chances of developing breast cancer. They suggest that this would be something similar to prescribing statins to patients at risk of heart disease. But tamoxifen has been linked with womb cancer, blood clots and stroke.

Prostate cancer updates

A Hunter-based prostate cancer support group says ground-breaking research by the University of Newcastle will help save many lives in the region. This new work has found patients with localized advanced prostate cancer can double their chances of survival by undertaking hormone therapy in combination with radiology treatment. This comes from a 10 year trial, coordinated by the University's Professor Jim Debnam.

From fatigued to fantastic! You CAN effectively treat CFS, fatigue, fibromyalgia and muscle pain

The “perfect storm” for Fibromyalgia, CFS/ME, and fatigue in general is preparing to hit. A combination of poor nutrition, decreasing sleep, increasing stress and environmental toxins has created a human energy crisis of unprecedented proportions. Over the past 10 years, the incidence of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FMS) has exploded by 400 to 1000 percent, as documented in five separate studies. The numbers for those with CFS in the U.S., previously estimated at 500,000, are now being re-tallied at closer to 1- 2.5 million. Previous estimates placed the number of Americans with FMS at 6 million. Studies worldwide suggest this has likely gone up in the last decade to ~ 12-24 million Americans! Meanwhile, ¼ of Americans suffer with chronic pain and most are fatigued.

Improved technology is improving outcomes for cardiac stent patients

While coronary artery bypass surgery has long been the standard treatment for patients with the most extensive forms of coronary artery disease, the results of a recent study by an international team of researchers suggests that advances in technology appear to be narrowing the "benefit gap" between the two approaches. The results of the study appear in the March 17, 2011 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. (CMDI) has announced the formation of Great Lakes NeuroTech (www.GLNeuroTech.com), a spin-off company which has acquired the rights to develop, market, and manufacture clinical motor assessment and therapy systems for the movement disorders market as well as physiological monitors for research and education markets. Great Lakes NeuroTech (GLN) will perform R&D, engineering, manufacturing, distribution, and exporting of these technologies through two divisions: Movement Disorders and Research & Education Systems.

PHOENIX phase III trial of PHP for distributive shock to continue after positive midpoint recommendation from DMB

The PHOENIX trial is a European, placebo-controlled, Phase III study treating catecholamine-resistant patients in distributive shock with the Nitric Oxide (NO) scavenger Pyridoxalated Haemoglobin Polyoxyethylene Conjugate (PHP). The study was launched by Curacyte AG in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands and in the United Kingdom in 2009.

Cancer drug Gleevec may hold promise against scleroderma: Study

A drug approved to treat certain types of cancer has shown promising results in the treatment of patients with scleroderma, according to results from an open-label Phase II trial. While the drug's efficacy must be demonstrated in a Phase III trial, the gold standard for testing a drug, researchers are optimistic that Gleevec- (imatinib) could potentially be a weapon against the chronic connective tissue disease for which a treatment has remained elusive.
