iPrEx update, bone mineral density study highlighted at day three of 18th CROI

The 18th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections is being held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston from February 27 through March 2. Day three of this major HIV/AIDS research conference included the following selected presentations from scientists supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health.

HIV prevention, treatment highlighted at Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections

Today was the last day of the 18th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, a key HIV/AIDS research meeting being held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston from February 27 through March 2. Highlighted below are selected presentations from March 2nd on research supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, both components of the National Institutes of Health.

FDA accepts Lundbeck's clobazam NDA for review

Lundbeck Inc. today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has accepted for review a New Drug Application for the investigational compound clobazam as adjunctive therapy in treating seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in patients two years and older.

BNCT treatment proves effective in treating recurrent head, neck cancer

Biologically targeted BNCT treatment is based on producing radiation inside a tumour using boron-10 and thermal neutrons. Boron-10 is introduced into cancer cells with the help of a special carrier substance (phenylalanine), after which the tumour is irradiated with lowenergy neutrons.

First implantable heart transplant using new LVAD performed at University of Utah Hospital

Surgeons at University of Utah Hospital have performed the hospital's first implant of a new-generation left ventricular assist device using the HeartWare HVAD. The tiny, partial artificial heart device is being used as part of a national research study for patients with advanced heart failure who are not candidates for heart transplantation.

Novel gene therapy can promote removal of amyloid plaques and prevent Alzheimer's disease

Gene therapy that boosts the ability of brain cells to gobble up toxic proteins prevents development of Alzheimer's disease in mice that are predestined to develop it, report researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center. They say the treatment - which is given just once - could potentially do the same in people at the beginning stages of the disease.

Combination therapy may reduce albuminuria in patients with type 2 diabetes: Study

Results from a Phase 2, 8-week dose-ranging study using low doses of atrasentan in patients with diabetic kidney disease were published this week in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. The published study results suggest that atrasentan, used in conjunction with renin-angiotensin system inhibitors, may reduce albuminuria (presence of protein in urine) for patients with type 2 diabetes.
