Lytix Biopharma, KAEL-GemVax initiate treatment in LTX-315/GV1001 combination anti-cancer vaccine trial

The Norwegian biopharmaceutical company Lytix Biopharma and the Korean biotechnology company KAEL-GemVax announced today the successful first treatment in the study of a combination of LTX-315 and GV1001 as anti-cancer vaccine therapy.

PET/CT scan predicts, detects local recurrence after radiofrequency ablation

A study published in the December issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine identified positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scans as a potentially useful tool for predicting local recurrence in lung cancer patients treated with radiofrequency ablation (RFA). RFA, which uses localized thermal energy to kill cancer cells, is increasingly used as an alternative treatment for patients unable to undergo surgery or other therapies to treat lung cancer.

Promising Phase 2 data of perifosine in CLL and HL presented at 52nd ASH

Keryx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced data presented for the first time at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology showing promising clinical activity, safety and tolerability of perifosine in patients with advanced chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL). KRX-0401 (perifosine) is the Company's novel, potentially first-in-class, oral anti-cancer agent that inhibits Akt activation in the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway.

New ways to identify patients most likely to respond to cancer vaccine treatment

A personalized vaccine is a powerful therapy to prevent recurrence among certain follicular lymphoma patients, according to the latest results of ongoing research led by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The new findings show that when these patients - whose tumors are marked by a specific protein that may be present in up to half of people with this type of cancer -- receive a vaccine made from their own tumor cells, disease-free survival is improved by nearly two years, compared with patients who receive a placebo.

IMO-4200 dual agonist increases antitumor activity in lymphoma models: Study

Idera Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today presented data showing that IMO-4200, a dual agonist of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 7 and TLR8, in combination with approved cancer treatments, rituximab or bortezomib, significantly increased antitumor activity in several preclinical lymphoma models. The presentation, entitled "Antitumor Activity of an RNA-Based Agonist of TLR7 and 8 in Preclinical Models of Hematological Malignancies," was made at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society for Hematology in Orlando, Florida by Idera scientists.

Cylene Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has been selected to present data describing the activity of their first-in-class CK2 inhibitor at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology, to be held on December 4-7 in Orlando, FL, the company announced today. Kenna Anderes, VP Cancer Biology at Cylene, will discuss research on targeting CK2, a protein kinase that is essential for the progression of multiple myeloma but that has not been previously exploited as an anticancer target.

Data analysis reveals significant risk factors for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the most common condition-related cause of death in chronic epilepsy. Case-control studies using living people with epilepsy as controls have aimed at identifying factors that distinguish the epilepsy patient at risk of SUDEP, but there are disagreements between studies and a lack of precision in the risk estimates attributed, in part, to the small number of cases in each study.

Boceprevir drug may cure hepatitis C

The outlook for patients with hepatitis C continues to improve as results from a clinical trial led by a Saint Louis University researcher found that the drug boceprevir helped cure hard-to-treat patients. The findings were reported at the 61st annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease's earlier in November.

New analysis of Soliris in patients with PNH presented at ASH Annual Meeting

Independent investigators reported today that patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria who were treated long-term with Soliris (eculizumab) achieved survival comparable to that of an age- and gender-matched normal population. Findings from this investigator-led analysis were reported in an oral presentation today at the 52nd American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting and Exposition in Orlando.
