Rebiotix's RBX2660 receives FDA Breakthrough Therapy designation for treatment of recurrent C diff infection

Rebiotix Inc. today announced that U.S. Food and Drug Administration has designated its lead Microbiota Restoration Therapy (MRT) RBX2660 as a Breakthrough Therapy for the treatment of recurrent Clostridium difficile (C diff) infection, a challenging to treat gastrointestinal (GI) infection that causes 29,000 deaths in the U.S. annually.

It is estimated that each year in the United States 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to one or more types of antibiotics, and at least 23,000 people will die because of these infections. This problem is being exacerbated by overuse of antibiotics for livestock and also in community clinical practice. This overuse, combined with the slow pace of novel drug discovery is a growing threat to public health.

New capsule form of FMT raises hopes for treating C. difficile infection

A new capsule form of faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has raised hopes that this effective treatment for Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection and other bowel conditions might soon become mainstream. A recently-reported study confirmed that capsules containing a frozen suspension of faecal material harvested from healthy unrelated donors was well tolerated and effectively resolved diarrhoea in 90% of patients with difficult-to-treat C. difficile infection.

New study calls for new treatments for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae infection

Researchers at The Medicines Company presented data from a multi-national cohort that demonstrates the mortality and morbidity, and poor outcomes, associated with current therapies in patients with infections due to carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). The data from this analysis has guided the design of the company’s on-going clinical studies of its Phase 3 compound, CARBAVANCE® (meropenem/RPX7009) and was presented at the Interscience Conference of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) and the International Congress of Chemotherapy and Infection (ICC) joint meeting in San Diego, CA.

Study compares effectiveness of nafcillin and cefazolin in patients with MSSA blood stream infections

Research comparing clinical outcomes between patients receiving nafcillin and cefazolin for treatment of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bacteremia shows that overall treatment failure rate among patients receiving cefazolin was no worse than nafcillin, and significantly fewer adverse effects were documented for those receiving cefazolin.
