Aβ, tau and Fyn protein interactions may lead to brain dysfunction and AD

Though the cause of Alzheimer's disease still is unknown, recent studies have implicated three proteins strongly in its onset. New research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Gladstone Institutes and the Baylor College of Medicine indicates that interactions between those three proteins might lead to brain dysfunction and AD in a mouse model of the disease.

Obesity in children today may contribute to 2-5 year decline in life expectancy

For the first time in history, the next generation will not live longer, or even as long, as their parents. "Diseases such as Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart conditions and joint deterioration - what were once considered 'adult' diseases - are regularly being diagnosed in children, due to the prevalence of obesity," said Jessica Bartfield, MD, internal medicine and medical weight-loss specialist at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, part of the Loyola University Health System.

Micromet, MedImmune initiate MT111 Phase 1 trial in patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer

MedImmune, the global biologics unit of AstraZeneca PLC and Micromet, today announced the initiation of a Phase 1 trial of MEDI-565 in patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancers. MEDI-565 is a BiTE antibody designed to direct a patient's T cells, the body's most potent killer cells, against cancer cells that express carcinoembryonic antigen.

Daiichi Sankyo and ArQule initiate enrollment in ARQ 197 Phase 3 trial in NSCLC

Daiichi Sankyo Company, Limited and ArQule, Inc. today announced that the first patient has been enrolled in the Phase 3 trial of ARQ 197, an investigational selective inhibitor of the c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase, in combination with erlotinib, for patients diagnosed with non-squamous, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have received one or two prior systemic anti-cancer therapies.

But most research findings are buried in the scientific literature, and linking basic biological processes to genomic information can be difficult without substantial effort or training. It is becoming well accepted that, as well as too little exercise, too much sitting is bad for people's health. Now a new study has found that it is not just the length of time people spend sitting down that can make a difference, but also the number of breaks that they take while sitting at their desk or on their sofa. Plenty of breaks, even if they are as little as one minute, seem to be good for people's hearts and their waistlines.
