Inspire third quarter net loss decreases to $7.6 million

Inspire Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2010, reporting a net loss of $7.6 million or ($0.09) per share, an improvement from the third quarter of 2009 during which the Company incurred a net loss of $8.5 million or ($0.12) per share.

Kidney disease registry could help clinicians to evaluate treatment strategies for CKD patients

A registry of health care information on patients with mild to moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) could help physicians improve care for affected individuals, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology (CJASN). The results suggest that officials could use such a registry to develop a national surveillance system to identify and track various aspects of CKD.

Phase III study suggests CYCLOSET tablets improve glycemic control

Santarus, Inc. and VeroScience LLC today announced that analyses of 379-patient subset data from a 3,070-patient Phase III safety study conducted with CYCLOSET (bromocriptine mesylate) tablets suggested that CYCLOSET as an add-on to oral antidiabetes drugs produced improvements in glycemic control irrespective of baseline duration of disease.

A large population-based study revealed that multiple antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) used by pregnant women to control seizures may cause poor school performance in their teenagers. The research team from Karolinska University Hospital and the University of Lund in Sweden confirmed that exposure to AEDs in utero may have a negative effect on neurodevelopment.

Millennium and Takeda initiate TAK-700 Phase III clinical trial in advanced prostate cancer

Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company with its parent company Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited today announced the initiation of a Phase III clinical trial for TAK-700 in the U.S. in patients with advanced prostate cancer. TAK-700 is a selective, oral, non-steroidal androgen synthesis inhibitor that in preclinical studies has been shown to selectively bind to and inhibit the enzyme 17,20 lyase in both the testes and adrenal glands.

Mitchell, M.D., clinical professor, Department of Medical Oncology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, and associate director of Diversity Programs for the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson, was recently named 'Physician of the Year' by CancerCare, a national nonprofit organization that provides free, professional support services to anyone affected by cancer: people with cancer, caregivers, children, loved ones, and the bereaved. Dr. Mitchell is being honored for her work in gastrointestinal malignancies.

New findings show combinational therapy effective for patients with DLBCL lymphoma

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a type of aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that accounts for approximately 40 percent of lymphomas among adults. If left untreated, it is fatal. The existing treatments have a cure rate that is slightly over 50 percent but destroy healthy cells along with the cancer cells.

Etanercept plus MTX improves height, weight, and BMI in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Researchers from the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center observed a statistically significant increase in mean height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) percentiles in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) who were treated with etanercept or etanercept plus methotrexate (MTX). JIA patients treated with MTX alone did not display an increase in growth percentiles.

An antibody loaded with an anti-cancer agent produced complete or partial remissions in 38 percent of patients with relapsed or therapy-resistant Hodgkin lymphoma enrolled in a phase I clinical trial, investigators report in the Nov. 4 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
