Study finds risk of toxicity in Phase I radiation oncology clinical trials

Risks to patients enrolled in Phase I radiation oncology clinical trials are higher than previously appreciated, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson. The findings will be presented at the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting in San Diego.

Curemark awarded QTDP grant to advance development of CM-AT for autism

Curemark LLC, a drug research and development company focused on the treatment of neurological diseases, announced today that it has been awarded a grant by the United States government under the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) Program to advance the development of its lead product CM-AT for autism. CM-AT is presently in Phase III clinical trials at 18 sites around the US.

Immunomedics product candidates, technologies receive recognition from QTDP program

Immunomedics, Inc. a biopharmaceutical company primarily focused on the development of monoclonal, antibody-based products for the targeted treatment of cancer, autoimmune and other serious diseases, today announced that all 12 applications from the Company were certified by the Internal Revenue Service of the Department of Treasury as qualified investments in accordance with the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) program under section 48D of the Internal Revenue Code. As a result, the Company will receive an aggregate cash award of $2.9 million.

Hyperion HPN-100 phase III pivotal study for urea cycle disorders meets primary endpoint

Hyperion Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that the Company's phase III pivotal study of glycerol phenylbutyrate (HPN-100), an investigational drug for the treatment of urea cycle disorders (UCDs), met its primary endpoint. The non-inferiority study, conducted under a Special Protocol Assessment (SPA) granted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June 2009, evaluated the ammonia control of glycerol phenylbutyrate as compared to sodium phenylbutyrate (BUPHENYL®).

Talecris Biotherapeutics announced today the Canadian launch of PROLASTIN®-C (Alpha1-Proteinase Inhibitor [Human])(A1PI), a more concentrated and purified formulation of PROLASTIN®, the only approved alpha1-augmentation therapy in Canada for more than 20 years. Combining telaprevir regimen with standard therapy improves SVR rate in hepatitis C

For patients with the most common form of hepatitis C being treated for the first time, the addition of an investigational hepatitis C-specific protease inhibitor called telaprevir to the current standard therapy markedly improved their sustained viral response (SVR or viral cure) rate.

Virus fighting just got a new boost

In a ground breaking study in the UK researchers have identified a previously unknown mechanism that allows the immune system to fight viruses even after they have infected cells. Until now it was believed that antibodies can act only before the virus enters the cells. The team now has found that antibodies that attached themselves to a virus were able to follow it into cells and help to destroy the virus before it started to reproduce. This could open up new avenues of therapy.

Optimer third quarter net loss increases to $11.8 million

Optimer Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2010. Optimer reported a net loss for the third quarter of 2010 of $11.8 million, or $0.30 per share, which was in line with the Company's expectations. This compares to a net loss for the third quarter of 2009 of $9.4 million, or $0.28 per share. The increase in net loss was primarily due to an increase in research and development and marketing expenses.
