Al Amal Hospital in Qatar commences treatment with Varian's RapidArc radiotherapy

One of the leading cancer centers in the Middle East has become among the first in the region to introduce fast and efficient RapidArc® radiotherapy treatments from Varian Medical Systems. Al Amal Hospital in Doha, Qatar, has treated nine brain cancer, prostate cancer and head & neck cancer patients with RapidArc since commencing treatments in early May, and it now plans to roll out the technology for many more indications.

Cancer survivor organizes first Chattanooga Oral Cancer Awareness Walk

Recently, oral cancer survivor Jeanna Richelson, organized the first Chattanooga Oral Cancer Awareness Walk, which raised donations for the Oral Cancer Foundation, and much needed awareness of a disease that too few Americans know about. According to the foundation's executive director Brian Hill, "I don't believe there has ever been an oral cancer walk that was this successful in its first year. This was an absolutely amazing effort by Jeanna and those who helped her make this possible."

FDA accepts ev3's Pipeline Embolization Device PMA for expedited review

ev3 Inc., a global endovascular device company, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) formally accepted for filing the company's Pre-Market Approval (PMA) application for the Pipeline Embolization Device for treatment of large, giant and wide-necked cerebral aneurysms. The FDA's action means that the PMA application was sufficiently complete and ready for substantive review. The filing date for regulatory purposes is May 18, 2010, the date the FDA received ev3's PMA submission.

IRX Therapeutics raises $8M to further develop pipeline of cancer vaccine candidates

IRX Therapeutics, a developer of novel immunomodulators to treat cancer and viral diseases, today announced that it has raised $8 million through a note offering to existing shareholders. The new funding will be used to further develop its pipeline of cancer vaccine candidates, including its lead product, IRX-2. IRX Therapeutics has now raised a total of more than $80 million in private financing.

Also participating in the round is Galera Angels, LLC, an angel investment group, and Analytical Bio-Chemistry Laboratories, Inc., of Columbia Missouri.

New research from NYU Langone Medical Center shows that a simple, inexpensive and noninvasive carotid artery ultrasound of the neck can be used as a preliminary diagnostic tool for coronary artery disease (CAD). Australian rainforests may provide potential cancer cure

Queensland scientists have discovered a drug to cure cancer that has effectively worked in animals and is to be tried on humans in the next phase of trials. This drug is plant-derived and is called EBC-46 for trial purposes. The plant from which it is obtained is found in the Australian tropical rainforest. The drug has shown to reduce inoperable tumors in 150 dogs, cats and horses and a ferret to a significant extent. The drug was developed over the past six years from the seed of a rainforest plant found in the Atherton Tablelands. Scientists had cultivated their own plantation of the plant since forming the company QBiotics Limited in 2004.

Report highlights deprivation gap caused by late diagnosis of cancer, differences in treatment choices

There could be as many as 14,000 fewer cases of cancer each year in England if everyone was as healthy as the richest 20 per cent in the country. And the difference between the classes is more marked among men than women. Among men there were 21 per cent more cases of cancer in the most deprived areas compared to the least deprived, whereas the gap among women was 11 per cent.
