Glioblastoma Multiforme is a fast-growing type of central nervous system tumor that forms from glial (supportive) tissue of the brain and spinal cord and has cells that look very different from normal cells. Glioblastoma multiforme usually occurs in adults and affects the brain more often than the spinal cord. Also called GBM, glioblastoma, and grade IV astrocytoma.

Data on ImmunoCellular Therapeutics' ICT-107 for GBM to be presented at 46th ASCO

ImmunoCellular Therapeutics, Ltd. a biotechnology company focused on the development of novel immune-based cancer therapies, today announced that data from a recent clinical trial of ICT-107, the company's dendritic cell based cancer vaccine candidate for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), will be presented at the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) being held June 4-8 in Chicago.

Phase 1/2 clinical trial data of Oncophage for recurrent high-grade glioma

Antigenics today announced that data from a multi-center Phase 1/2 clinical trial of Oncophage (vitespen) for recurrent high-grade glioma (brain cancer) was presented at the International Conference on Brain Tumor Research and Therapy. The study was conducted by the Brain Tumor Research Center at the University of California, San Francisco.

Researchers analyze relationship between extent of resection and outcome in patients with glioblastoma

Gliomas arise from the supporting cells of the brain, called the glia. These cells are subdivided into astrocytes, ependymal cells and oligodendroglial cells (or oligos). These tumors are graded from the lowest grade 1 to highest grade 4, with glioblastoma multiforme being the highest grade and deadliest type of glioma.

Celldex reports net loss of $6.6 million for first-quarter 2010

Celldex Therapeutics, Inc. today reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2010. Celldex reported a net loss of $6.6 million, or $0.21 per share, for the first quarter of 2010 compared to a net loss of $7.7 million, or $0.49 per share, for the first quarter of 2009. At March 31, 2010, Celldex reported cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities of $75.4 million, which the Company believes will be sufficient to meet estimated working capital requirements and fund operations into 2012.

Novel combined immunotherapy promising for treatment of malignant brain tumors

A new Phase I clinical trial conducted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute in Los Angeles shows that two innovative treatment approaches may safely be combined to treat patients with highly aggressive, malignant brain tumors called gliomas. The results suggest that combining the two therapies might boost their effectiveness and supports the pursuit of additional studies on this approach to treating these tumors.

Interim study results demonstrate anti-tumor activity of CytRx's INNO-206 in myeloma tumor cells

CytRx Corporation, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in oncology, today announced interim study results that showed its doxorubicin prodrug INNO-206 demonstrated statistically significant anti-tumor activity in human myeloma tumor cells growing in immune-deficient mice compared to a control group, while exhibiting significantly less toxicity than doxorubicin even though INNO-206 was administered at much higher doses.
