Pediatricians can speak to the on-the-ground impact of the shutdown on federally funded programs such as WIC and Head Start; can contextualize the national position of the AAP to Congress; and can provide local perspectives on why the shutdown is especially harmful to vulnerable children and families.

President says he'll negotiate budget only after gov't reopens without changes to health law

President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he will only compromise on the federal budget -- including addressing long-term Medicare and Medicaid costs -- after Republicans agree to reopen the federal government without changing the health law. Republicans may shift their focus to these budget battles and seek savings in entitlement programs and tax reform.

The summit will bring together top scientists, trainers, coaches, officials, retired professional players and manufacturers from across the United States, Canada and Europe to discuss concussion-related issues, including the science of concussion, impact on youth athletes and hockey community response. While the summit will focus on ice hockey, concussion-related topics will apply to all sports.

Excessive weight gain during pregnancy may have significant effect on future obesity among children

A study of 41,133 mothers and their children in Arkansas shows that high pregnancy weight gain increases the risk of obesity in those children through age 12. The findings, published Oct. 1 in PLoS Medicine by Princeton University, suggest pregnancy may be an especially important time to prevent obesity in the next generation.
