Researchers identify new target for cystic fibrosis

The lab of Kevin Foskett, PhD, the Isaac Ott Professor of Physiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, has found a possible new target for fighting cystic fibrosis (CF) that could compensate for the lack of a functioning ion channel in affected CF-related cells. Their finding appears in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Boehringer Ingelheim commences afatinib Phase III clinical trial in advanced breast cancer

Boehringer Ingelheim today announced the initiation of a phase III clinical trial to investigate one of its most advanced oncology pipeline compounds, afatinib, for the treatment of patients with advanced (metastatic) breast cancer. Afatinib is an oral compound (taken as a tablet), which is a next generation, targeted therapy, that irreversibly inhibits both, the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR/HER1) and the human epidermal receptor HER2, which are involved in tumour growth and spread.

Aradigm to present Phase 1 studies of inhaled liposomal ciprofloxacin at 2010 ERS Congress

Aradigm Corporation today announced it is presenting data on September 22, 2010, from its Phase 1 studies at the ERS Annual Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The podium presentation elaborates on the pharmacokinetic parameters of ciprofloxacin in the blood and sputum samples that were observed in the healthy volunteers and non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (BE) patients.

Transition stops TT-223 gastrin analogue combination clinical study in type 2 diabetes

Transition Therapeutics Inc. announced today that a clinical study of gastrin analogue TT-223 in combination with a Lilly proprietary GLP-1 analogue in patients with type 2 diabetes did not meet its efficacy endpoints. Given these findings, there will be no further development of TT-223.

Spike mat reduces muscle tension pain: Study

Spike mats do not alleviate chronic pain. Nor do they lead to a better night's sleep. But pain sufferers who have tested a spike mat did experience a measurable reduction in the worst peaks of pain. This is shown in a research study performed at Karlstad University in Sweden.

Cardiologists and surgeons may soon have a new tool to improve outcomes for patients requiring pacemakers, bypass surgery or angioplasties. Research led by Dr. James White and his colleagues at The University of Western Ontario has led to a new imaging technique, which provides a single, 3D high-resolution image of the heart revealing both its vasculature and the presence of scar tissue within the muscle.

Illinois CDH Proton Center to open ahead of schedule in October

Proton therapy, an alternative to radiation for the treatment of cancer, will be available in Illinois sooner than expected. Originally slated to open in early 2011, the CDH Proton Center, A ProCure Center, will open its doors Oct. 19, making it the first proton therapy center in Illinois and only the ninth in the country.
