Physicians decrease LABA/ICS combination therapy for asthma treatment: Survey

Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, finds that some surveyed physicians indicate that they will decrease their overall prescribing of long-acting beta2 agonists (LABA)/inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) combination therapies over the next 12 months for the treatment of asthma in response to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's new safety controls for LABA-containing medications.

CAS researchers confirm Gleevec’s first generation drug targets chronic myelogenous leukemia

Today, leukemia patients who have struggled with cancer therapy resistance and intolerance will now have more options thanks to targeted drug therapy. Such new treatment options are due, in part, to a rapid increase in journal and patent publications following the discovery of Gleevec, as reported by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), the world's authority for chemical information.

Mayo researchers develop new laboratory cell lines to study anaplastic thyroid cancer

To their deep dismay, researchers at Mayo Clinic discovered several years ago that laboratory samples of anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) they were using to help them find new treatments for this lethal disease were probably some other kind of cancer. It quickly became evident that the situation in their lab was common throughout the world. Up to half of the cell lines that were supposed to originate from patients with this rare thyroid cancer were either colon or melanoma cancer.

Two diabetes medications increase risk of heart attack, failure: Study

In contrast to previous reports, the risks of the composite endpoint of heart attack, heart failure, both, or death were the same about 4 percent for patients taking the diabetes drugs rosiglitazone or pioglitazone, according to a study published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.

Jordan Hospital receives approval to open new Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center

Jordan Hospital is pleased to announce that it has received approval from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for the opening of its new, state-of-the-art Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center located on the hospital campus in Plymouth, Mass. The Wound Center features the only hospital-based hyperbaric treatment chamber in the greater Plymouth and Cape Cod region. The new Wound Center provides individuals with chronic, non-healing wounds, a local option for wound care and hyperbaric therapy.

Cognitive behavioral therapy improves ADHD symptoms in adults: Study

Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who received medication and individual sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) showed greater improvement in symptoms through 12 months compared to patients who did not receive CBT, according to a study in the August 25 issue of JAMA.
