MonoSol Rx, the developers of PharmFilm® technology and a drug delivery company specializing in film pharmaceutical products, in collaboration with APR Applied Pharma Research s.a. of Switzerland and Labtec GmbH of Germany, today announced that its partner, Strativa Pharmaceuticals has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Zuplenz® oral soluble film for the prevention of postoperative, highly and moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy-induced, and radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

DFine announces closing of $36.2M round of equity financing

DFine, Inc., developer of minimally invasive solutions for treating vertebral pathologies, announced today the closing of a $36.2 million round of equity financing. The round was led by new investor Split Rock Partners. Funding was also contributed by new investor OrbiMed, and inside investors Prospect Venture Partners, Vanguard Ventures, BBT Fund/Apothecary Capital, Highland Capital Management and several private investors.

Uptake Medical completes Series B financing led by Maverick Capital

Uptake Medical, a privately held interventional pulmonology company, announced today that it has concluded its Series B financing from an investment group led by Maverick Capital, a new investor. The company plans to use this capital to obtain the CE mark and introduce its unique proprietary Bronchoscopic Thermal Vapor Ablation (BTVA) technology outside of the U.S. The company also has begun its approval cycle with the FDA in the U.S.

FDA grants orphan drug designation for Synageva BioPharma's SBC-102

Synageva BioPharma Corp., a privately held biopharmaceutical company, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted orphan drug designation for SBC-102, the Company's enzyme replacement therapy in development to treat Lysosomal Acid Lipase Deficiency, also known as Wolman Disease and Cholesteryl Ester Storage Disease, a condition for which there is currently no approved treatment.

Changes in Medicare Part B therapy rates likely to reduce Kindred Healthcare's revenues by $11M per year

Kindred Healthcare, Inc. today provided its estimate of the revenue effect of proposed rate changes to Medicare Part B therapy services included in the proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule rule. The proposed rule was released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS") on June 25. The proposed rule is subject to a 60-day public comment period and is scheduled to become effective January 1, 2011.

Nile completes dosing in CD-NP Phase II study for acute decompensated heart failure

Nile Therapeutics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel therapeutics for cardiovascular disease, today announced that it has completed the dosing of the last patient in NIL-CDNP-CT005, an open-label, single-blind, placebo-controlled Phase II study of CD-NP in patients with acute decompensated heart failure, or ADHF. The study was designed to provide additional information on the safety and tolerability of CD-NP when infused for up to 72 hours in patients with ADHF and mild to moderate renal insufficiency.

A new study finds that depressed patients show more symptom improvement when their therapists more competently follow the guidelines for delivering cognitive therapy.

Nearly 60% of Ontarians with rheumatoid arthritis fail to receive needed care from specialists: Study

Nearly 60 per cent of Ontarians with rheumatoid arthritis - an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints - were not seen by a specialist within a one year period to treat the debilitating disease, according to a new study. Even more concerning is that women of child-bearing age are less likely to see a specialist than women 45 or older, say researchers from St. Michael's Hospital, the Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences, and Women's College Hospital

European Commission approves new indication for ORENCIA in combination with MTX for RA

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company has today announced that on 1 July 2010 the European Commission approved a new indication for ORENCIA® (abatacept), in combination with methotrexate (MTX), for the treatment of moderate to severe active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adult patients who have responded inadequately to previous therapy with one or more disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) including MTX or a TNF-alpha inhibitor.

Study: High concentrations of cocoa flavanols decrease blood pressure

A new study by UCSF cardiologists and researchers found that high concentrations of cocoa flavanols decrease blood pressure, improve the health of blood vessels and increase the number of circulating blood-vessel-forming cells in patients with heart disease. The findings indicate that foods rich in flavanols - such as cocoa products, tea, wine, and various fruits and vegetables - have a cardio-protective benefit for heart disease patients.

Aastrom to pursue Phase 3 CLI clinical program through FDA SPA process
