McKesson first-quarter revenues increase to $27.5 billion

McKesson Corporation today reported that revenues for the first quarter ended June 30, 2010 were $27.5 billion compared to $26.7 billion a year ago. First-quarter earnings per diluted share was $1.10 compared to $1.06 per diluted share a year ago.

Exoskeletons, powered prostheses and optical sensory devices market to exceed $877 million in 2020: Study

Lockheed Martin announced recently that it has received a $1.1-million contract from the US Army for human trials and evaluation of its advanced ruggedized Human Universal Load Carrier (HULC) exoskeleton, "designed to augment soldiers' strength and endurance, as well as reduce load carriage injuries."

Palomar Medical second-quarter product and service revenues increase 8% to $13.0 million

Palomar Medical Technologies, Inc., a leading researcher and developer of light-based systems for cosmetic treatments, today announced financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2010. Revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2010 were $15.6 million, which represents a 4 percent increase over the $15.0 million reported in the second quarter of 2009. Product and service revenues increased to $13.0 million, an 8 percent increase over the $12.1 million in the second quarter of 2009.

Funding for electronic medical records expected as early as May, already stimulating business

Modern Healthcare: Funding to help doctors and hospitals buy electronic medical records could begin to flow through the Medicare program as early as May 2011, a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services official said Wednesday. But, the final shape of the program remains unclear as CMS works to implement 800 pages of new regulations. "We're now working toward actually making all of this a reality, and we have less than six months to do it," the official said (Conn, 7/28).

CryoLife second-quarter revenues increase 4% to record $29.3 million

CryoLife, Inc., an implantable biological medical device and cardiovascular tissue processing company, announced today its results for the second quarter of 2010. Revenues for the second quarter increased 4 percent to a second quarter record of $29.3 million compared to $28.2 million for the second quarter of 2009. Net income for the second quarter of 2010 was $2.9 million, or $0.10 per basic and fully diluted common share, compared to $2.5 million, or $0.09 per basic and fully diluted common share, for the second quarter of 2009.

Researchers find new pathway that leads to brain cell death in neurodegenerative disorders

Although their genetic underpinnings differ, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease are all characterized by the untimely death of brain cells. What triggers cell death in the brain? According to a new study published by researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in the July 30 issue of Molecular Cell, the answer in some cases is the untimely transfer of a gaseous molecule (known as nitric oxide, or NO) from one protein to another.
