LSDF announces awards for four Washington research teams

The Life Sciences Discovery Fund (LSDF) today announced $600,000 in awards to four Washington state-based research teams to support commercial development of health-related technologies. The funded projects will concentrate on improving the success rate of lumbar punctures (spinal taps) in children; developing a safer and more effective magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent; enhancing a DNA sequencing technology to profile T cells within the immune system; and developing a device to detect early stages of tooth decay.

Hybrid Linac-MR imaging system tracks cancer tumors in real time

Today, at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) in Philadelphia, a group of researchers from Stanford University will describe the latest developments toward their goal of integrating two existing medical devices -- medical linear accelerators, or "linacs," which produce powerful X-rays for treating cancer, and magnetic resonance imagers (MRIs), which are widely used to image tumors in the human body.

Ingestion of probiotic supplements prevents eczema: Study

Mothers who drank milk with a probiotic supplement during and after pregnancy were able to cut the incidence of eczema in their children by almost half,a new study published in the British Journal of Dermatology has shown.

Seattle Genetics, Agensys commence ASG-5ME ADC phase I clinical trial for metastatic pancreatic cancer

Seattle Genetics, Inc. and Agensys, Inc., an affiliate of Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma Inc., today announced that they have initiated a phase I clinical trial of ASG-5ME for the treatment of metastatic pancreatic cancer. ASG-5ME is an antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) that is being co-developed by both companies for the treatment of solid tumors.

Quantitative capabilities of Helicos' single-molecule sequencing technology demonstrated

Helicos BioSciences Corporation today announced a publication entitled "Amplification-free digital gene expression profiling from minute cell quantities" appearing on line in Nature Methods co-authored by Dr. Daniel A. Haber and colleagues from Massachusetts General Hospital. The paper demonstrates the quantitative capabilities of Helicos' single-molecule sequencing technology and its potential to reveal important genomic differences when minimal numbers of cells are available for analysis.

ASTRO accepts 4 abstracts on Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy for NSCLC

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has accepted four abstracts from users of Elekta Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) technology on the use of SBRT to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The clinicians will present their findings during presentations at ASTRO's 52nd Annual Meeting (October 31 - November 4) at the San Diego Convention Center.

The results of the ground-breaking safety and effectiveness study of an antiretroviral microbicide gel study were reported today by the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa at the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria.
