Roche's new dual-PCR target HIV-1 viral load test receives FDA approval

Roche Molecular Diagnostics announced today that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved its new dual-PCR target HIV-1 viral load test to quantify the amount of virus in a patient's blood. The COBAS® AmpliPrep/COBAS® TaqMan® HIV-1 Test, v2.0 is the first quantitative viral load test to amplify and detect two separate regions of a target genome and offers a fully automated and reliable solution for physicians to make informed treatment decisions for HIV-1 patients undergoing antiretroviral therapy.

Promising results of ABRAXANE for bladder cancer support efficacy of nab-driven chemotherapy

Abraxis BioScience, Inc. announced today that findings from a phase 1 randomized trial demonstrated that the nanoparticle albumin bound (nab®) driven chemotherapy, nab-paclitaxel (ABRAXANE® for Injectable Suspension; paclitaxel albumin protein-bound particles for injectable suspension) is well-tolerated and active in the second-line treatment of high-grade, non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer that has been refractory to standard intra-bladder infusion (intravesical) therapy.

Life Technologies partners to create Genomic Cancer Care Alliance

Life Technologies Corporation today announced the creation of the Genomic Cancer Care Alliance to help people battling cancer gain access to treatment options found through analysis of their genomic information. Founding partners include Fox Chase Cancer Center, Scripps Genomic Medicine, and the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen). The announcement came during the Consumer Genetics Conference being held June 2-4 in Boston.

ASTRO to honor David Larson and William McBride with prestigious Gold Medal award

David Larson, M.D., Ph.D., FASTRO, and William McBride, D.Sc., Ph.D., have been chosen to receive the American Society for Radiation Oncology's most prestigious award, the Gold Medal. They will be presented with this honor at the Awards Ceremony during ASTRO's 52nd Annual Meeting, taking place October 31 to November 4, 2010, in San Diego.

Functional profiling using EVA/PCD for prescribing treatment regimens for Stage IV NSCLC improve survival

A team of investigators at Rational Therapeutics, Inc. and the Malcolm Todd Cancer Institute (Long Beach, Calif.) has reported that functional profiling using ex-vivo analysis of programmed cell death (EVA/PCD) can be used to prescribe treatment regimens that double the response rate and survival in patients with Stage IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The findings of their phase II clinical trial will be presented on Sunday, June 6th at the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago.

Study of methylphenidate for cancer-related fatigue benefits patients with stage III/IV disease

Cancer-related fatigue is often a major problem for cancer patients, beginning at diagnosis, during treatment and after completing therapy. Researchers at Mayo Clinic and the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG) recently completed a study testing methylphenidate in the treatment of cancer-related fatigue and found that, while it did not improve fatigue for a broad group of patients, the data did not rule out a benefit for those with stage III/IV cancer.

Oxycyte perfluorocarbon emulsion demonstrates marked neuroprotective effect in rat model of spinal cord injury

Oxygen Biotherapeutics, Inc. today reported on the results of two University of Miami Miller School of Medicine studies involving the Company's third-generation perfluorocarbon, Oxycyte® perfluorocarbon emulsion. Both study reports showed that Oxycyte® has a marked neuroprotective effect in a rat model of spinal cord injury.

Study confirms Azilect as a selective MAO-B inhibitor

Teva Neuroscience Inc. today announced the publication of a study demonstrating the selectivity of Azilect® (rasagiline tablets) for inhibition of MAO-B (monoamine oxidase-B) at the maximum approved dose of 1 mg/day. The data was published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology OnlineFirst on May 5, 2010.
