Feds crack down on health care fraud in California, Florida

The Sacramento Bee reports: "Three Sacramento-area residents are among 11 people, including five doctors, accused of participating in a Medicare fraud ring. ... From February 2006 through August 2008, the defendants are alleged to have operated three health-care clinics -- in Sacramento, Carmichael and Richmond -- that submitted more than $5 million in allegedly fraudulent claims to Medicare" (Locke, 5/25).

Research findings offer possible applications in diagnosis and treatment of patients with atherosclerosis

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine have shown that use of magnetic resonance imaging in an animal model can non-invasively identify dangerous plaques. The findings, which appear in the May issue of Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging, offer possible applications in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with atherosclerosis.

EMEND indication helps women prevent CINV

More women fighting cancers such as breast, lung, colorectal and ovarian can now help prevent the nausea and vomiting associated with their treatment of moderately emetogenic (vomit-inducing) cancer chemotherapy. Although new treatment entities have been developed in the past 10 years for control of chemically-induced nausea and vomiting, CINV remains a significant problem in the context of current practice.

CTRC starts enrolment in Phase 2 combination trial of REOLYSIN and gemcitabine for advanced pancreatic cancer

Oncolytics Biotech Inc. announced today that the Cancer Therapy & Research Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (CTRC) has started patient enrolment in a U.S. Phase 2 clinical trial using intravenous administration of REOLYSIN(R) in combination with gemcitabine (Gemzar(R)) in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Monica Mita of the CTRC.

Presidio Pharmaceuticals to advance PPI-1301 inhibitor from HCV NS5A program into clinical development

Presidio Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that they have selected a second clinical candidate, PPI-1301, from their hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A program for advancement into clinical development. Presidio's first NS5A inhibitor, PPI-461, is currently undergoing evaluation in a Phase 1a clinical study.

Lyophilized heparin, a proprietary anticoagulant developed specifically for cord blood collection, demonstrated a better ability to preserve the number of viable cells over a longer period of time than a commonly-used anticoagulant, citrate phosphate dextrose, according to a study presented today at the International Society for Cellular Therapy Annual Meeting.

Antiviral treatment, SVR prevent esophageal varices in patients with HCV-induced cirrhosis

Italian researchers have discovered that antiviral treatment and sustained virologic response prevents esophageal varices in patients with compensated hepatitis C -induced cirrhosis, indicating that endoscopic surveillance can be safely delayed or avoided in these patients. Full findings are published in the June issue of Hepatology, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine today published new medical treatment guidelines for providing care to workers with injuries and disorders of the hip and groin. The new guidelines, which represent the latest chapter in ACOEM's comprehensive publication Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines, are available on line now via ACOEM's APG-I web application; a print version will be available in the fall of 2010, when the Third Edition hard-copy of Occupational Medicine Practice Guidelines is published.
